CV personal statement examples

A CV personal statement is the three-to-five sentence profile at the top of a UK CV: who you are, what you offer with one piece of proof, and the role you want next. Keep it to 150 words or fewer (Prospects) and rewrite it for each application. The CV personal statement examples below cover students, graduates, career changers, customer service and senior roles.

Senior leader

Opening statement, personal summary: other names for the same section

Prospects lists the other names employers and templates use for this section: opening statement, personal profile, personal summary and executive summary. If a job advert or form asks for a personal profile, use the same three-to-five sentences; every personal profile example on this page works under either heading. A personal summary or executive summary on a senior CV follows the same order, with bigger numbers.

What good personal statement examples for a CV have in common

  • One voice. First or third person both work, but keep the same voice all the way through (Prospects).
  • Proof, not adjectives. Prospects warns against bland lines such as “I work well independently and as part of a team”; one result with a number does more.
  • Written for this job. Don't paste from your cover letter or from online examples (Prospects): use the examples above for the shape, then write your own facts.
  • The role you want, named. End with the job or sector, so the reader knows where you fit.

How to write yours in five minutes

  1. Write your job title, years and sector in one sentence.
  2. Add the one result you'd most want them to remember, with a number.
  3. Pick the top requirement from the advert and show you have it.
  4. End with the role you want.
  5. Cut every word that doesn't add a fact.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How long should a CV personal statement be?

Up to 150 words (Prospects), usually three to five sentences.

Should a personal statement be in the first person?

Either works. Many UK CVs drop the "I" ("Chartered accountant with…"); just be consistent.

Is a personal statement the same as a cover letter?

No. It's a short profile at the top of your CV; the cover letter is a separate letter for one job.

Do I need a personal statement?

It's common on UK CVs and sits at the top, so it is usually the first thing an employer sees.

Is a personal profile the same as a personal statement?

Yes. Prospects lists personal profile, opening statement, personal summary and executive summary as other names for the same section at the top of your CV. Write it the same way: who you are, your strongest result, and the role you want, in 150 words or fewer.

How do I write a CV personal statement as a student?

Build it on your degree, projects, societies, volunteering and part-time work, as Prospects advises for anyone with little work experience. Name your course and university, give one result with a number, and finish with the role or placement you are applying for.
