Resignation letter with notice period
State the notice period from your offer letter and the last working day it gives. If you want to leave early, ask politely for a shorter notice or a buyout instead of assuming it. See the resignation letter with notice period.
Immediate resignation letter
Leaving early is a request: give a reason if you want, and offer to buy out the notice if your policy allows. See the immediate resignation letter.
Resignation letter for personal reasons or higher studies
One neutral line is enough: you don't have to explain. See the letters for personal reasons, higher studies, and a short and simple resignation letter.
Resignation email
Email is a common way to resign; check whether your company also needs the HR portal. Use the subject “Resignation – [Your name], [Designation]”, send it to your reporting manager, copy HR, and attach the letter as a PDF. Keep the sent email: depending on your appointment letter, notice counts from the day you send it or the day it is accepted.
How to submit your resignation in India
- Tell your manager in person or on a call first, then send the letter the same day.
- Check your offer letter for the notice period and whether a buyout is allowed.
- Ask HR to confirm your last working day in writing.
- Plan the handover: documents, passwords, open work.
- On your last day, collect your relieving letter and experience letter, and ask when the full-and-final settlement is paid.

After you resign: relieving and experience letters

What is the format of a resignation letter?
Date and your manager's details, a subject line, one sentence resigning from your post, your last working day as per your notice period, an offer to hand over, a request for your relieving and experience letters and settlement, thanks, and your name with employee ID.
Can I send my resignation by email?
Yes. Email to your reporting manager with HR copied is a common way to resign; check whether your company also needs the HR portal. Attach the letter as a PDF and keep the sent email: depending on your appointment letter, notice counts from the day you send it or the day it is accepted.
What should a resignation letter in India include?
Your role and company, the date, a clear statement that you're resigning, your last working day as per the notice period in your offer letter, an offer to hand over, and a polite request for your relieving letter, experience letter and full-and-final settlement. Keep the reason short or leave it out — it isn't required.
Should I give the reason for leaving?
You don't have to, and in most cases a single neutral line is best ("to pursue an opportunity that aligns with my career goals"). Save the honest detail for the exit interview if you want to give it at all. The letter goes in your HR file; keep it clean.
Can I ask to buy out my notice period?
Yes, if your offer letter or company policy allows it; the shortfall is then usually recovered from your final settlement as the policy sets out. Tick the buyout option and the letter will request it politely, without assuming it's approved.
Do I need to sign it?
If you email it, your typed name is enough. If HR wants a physical copy, print the PDF and sign above your name. Send it to your manager and copy HR — and keep a copy for yourself with the date you sent it: depending on your appointment letter, notice counts from the day you send it or the day it is accepted.
