Resigning in Pakistan: at a glance
- Notice
- Set by your appointment letter; one month for workmen covered by the Standing Orders law (SO 12(1)), which also allows a month's wages in lieu.
- In writing?
- Yes. For workmen covered by the Standing Orders law, a permanent workman gives one month's notice or one month's wages in lieu (Standing Order 12(1)); temporary workers and probationers don't have to give notice (12(2)).
- Leaving early
- Ask to buy out the notice or to be relieved early; it needs your employer's agreement unless the Standing Orders law covers you.
- Final settlement
- Salary to your last day and unused leave. For workmen under the Standing Orders law: gratuity of 30 days' wages per year of service unless a qualifying provident fund replaces it (SO 12(6)), paid within two working days (SO 12(4)). Others: as your contract says.
- Documents
- Experience letter, relieving letter and final settlement statement.
- The law
- Your contract; the Industrial and Commercial Employment (Standing Orders) Ordinance 1968 (still applied in Punjab), the Sindh Terms of Employment (Standing Orders) Act 2015 and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Industrial and Commercial Employment (Standing Orders) Act 2013.
The format HR expects
- “To”, the HR Manager or your manager, and the company, then a subject line: “Resignation from the position of …”.
- That you are resigning, with your designation, in the first sentence.
- Your notice and last working day. Your appointment letter sets the notice.
- A handover offer, and a request for your documents and final settlement.
Your notice period
Your appointment letter or company policy sets it. For workmen covered by the Standing Orders law (the 1968 Ordinance in Punjab, the Sindh Act 2015 and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Act 2013), a permanent workman gives one month's notice or one month's wages in lieu; temporary workers and probationers don't have to give notice. Many companies accept a month's salary instead of notice; tick the buyout option and the letter asks politely.
Final settlement and documents
Your final settlement covers salary to your last day and leave you haven't taken. Workmen under the Standing Orders law are also owed gratuity of 30 days' wages per year of service (unless a qualifying provident fund replaces it), paid within two working days; for others, your contract decides. Ask for your experience letter too: your next employer will want it.
For teachers
Address it to the Principal. Schools often ask you to finish the term or give a full month so classes are covered; the form's handover line covers that. Put the class and subject you teach in the job title.
