Resignation letter for personal reasons

Keep the reason to one line. "Due to personal reasons" is complete and professional; the rest of the letter should be about your notice period, handover and documents.

How much to say

“Due to personal reasons” or “due to family commitments” is enough. Details about health, family or relocation can be shared in conversation if you want to. They don't need to be in a letter that stays in your HR file.

If you'd like to be a little more specific without opening a discussion, pick one of these and stop there:

  • “as I am relocating to [city] for family reasons”
  • “to take care of a family member”
  • “for health reasons”
  • “as I am taking a planned break from work”

What to keep out of the letter

Medical details, a family member's situation, money trouble and complaints about your manager or team. A resignation letter is a record, and you can't edit it later. If something at work is part of why you're leaving and you want it on record, raise it with HR separately or in your exit interview, where it can be answered.

When your manager asks why

Have one calm sentence ready, such as “Something at home needs my full attention right now, and I'd rather not go into detail.” Say it kindly and leave it there. If they press, repeat it; you don't need a new answer each time.

Before you resign: is there another option?

If the situation may pass in a few months, ask HR whether your company offers unpaid leave, a career break or a spell of remote work. Read the leave policy first so you know what to ask for. Resigning stays open to you if the answer is no.

If the reason means you need flexibility

  • Need to leave sooner? Ask for early release; see the immediate resignation letter.
  • Want to keep the door open? Add a line that you'd be glad to return if circumstances change. The warm tone in the generator does this.

The reason doesn't change what you're owed

Section 17(2) of the Code on Wages, 2019, in force since 21 November 2025, covers every employee who has resigned, with no exception for the reason. It says the wages payable are to be paid within two working days of the resignation, unless the government sets a different limit or another law has its own. Ask HR in writing for the date and an itemised full-and-final statement.

Before your last day, read your relieving letter and experience letter and check what they say about you. If either mentions your personal reason and you'd rather it didn't, ask HR to take it out.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is "personal reasons" a good enough reason?

Yes. It is a complete reason for a resignation letter. Share more in person only if you want to.

Should I talk to my manager before sending the letter?

Usually yes. A short conversation first, then the letter the same day, is the most respectful order.

Can I resign for personal reasons during a notice period dispute?

Plan to serve your notice period as usual, whatever the reason. If you need to leave sooner, ask for early release in so many words.

Will "personal reasons" worry my next employer?

The resignation letter stays with your old employer. If an interviewer asks why you left, give the same short answer and move on to what you want next.

What do I say in the exit interview?

As much or as little as you like. If the reason is private, repeat the line from your letter. If something at work played a part and you want it fixed for the people who stay, the exit interview is the place to say it calmly, with examples.

Can I resign for health reasons without medical details?

Yes. Write "for health reasons" and nothing more. If you might want time off instead of leaving, ask HR about the leave policy before you send the letter.
