Can you resign effective immediately?
The letter is the easy part. What matters is what your contract and local law say about leaving without notice. In the US most jobs are at-will, so no law sets your notice, but leaving without it can cost you a reference or a PTO payout under some policies. In the Philippines the Labor Code lets you resign without notice only for the just causes Article 300 lists, or if your employer agrees to release you. In South Africa you can only skip the notice if your employer waives it, and the law says that if they waive it they still pay for it unless you agree otherwise. In the UK and India your contract sets the notice, and an employer who has not agreed to an early release can hold you to it. Read your contract first.
How to write a resignation letter with immediate effect
A simple resignation letter with immediate effect has four parts. If you are asking how to write a resignation letter effective immediately, this is the whole answer, whether you resign with no notice or with a day's notice:
- Say that you are resigning and from which job, effective immediately, and give today's date as your last day.
- Keep the reason to one neutral line, or leave it out. Say sorry for the short notice if that is true.
- Offer what you can: handover notes today, return of company property, your open work.
- Ask for what you are owed: final pay, unused leave, and a confirmation of your employment dates.
Immediate resignation letter for personal reasons
Personal reasons is the most common line and the safest: it is true for almost everyone and it asks nothing of your employer. You don't have to give details, and the letter stays in your file, so keep anything you would not want read later out of it.
When the reason is the workplace
If you are leaving because of harassment, unsafe conditions or unfair treatment, keep the letter factual and keep your own record: dates, what happened, who was told, and any messages. Say that you are willing to discuss it with HR rather than listing every incident in the letter. Where a law or a just cause applies, as in the Philippines, name it. If you think your rights were breached, take advice from your labour authority or a lawyer before you send anything.
Resigning effective immediately by email
Every sample above is plain text, so it works as an immediate resignation letter template in Word format, in Google Docs or in an email; replace the [brackets] and keep it to one page. Use a clear subject line, such as “Resignation effective immediately: [your name]”, copy HR if your company expects it, and keep the sent copy somewhere outside your work account in case your access ends at once. If you have spoken to your manager, say so in the first line.
After you send it
Ask for a reply that confirms your last day. In the US your state sets when your final paycheck is due. In the Philippines the Certificate of Employment is due within three days of your request and final pay within 30 days of your last day. In the UK your P45 comes after you leave. In India, ask HR in writing whether your relieving letter and settlement depend on serving or buying out the notice. A short resignation letter works if you have already spoken to your manager. If you can serve even part of your notice, the letter with a notice period is the safer choice.
In India: early release and buyout
Indian appointment letters set a notice period, so “immediate” usually means asking to be released early. Some letters let you pay for the notice days you don't serve, or have them deducted from your settlement; yours is in your appointment letter or HR policy. Ask HR how the buyout is worked out, whether unused earned leave can be set against the days, and whether the amount comes from your settlement. Offer a specific earlier date, promise a complete handover, and get the approval by email before you confirm a joining date elsewhere. Then ask for your relieving letter and experience letter. The Code on Wages, 2019 (section 17(2)) says wages of an employee who has resigned are paid within two working days of the resignation; ask HR which date applies to you.
