Using ChatGPT as a resume builder: prompts for your resume, CV and cover letter

Used as a ChatGPT resume builder, ChatGPT is good at rewording what you already have: turning duties into achievement bullets, shortening a summary, matching your wording to a job ad, drafting a cover letter. It is bad at facts it doesn't have, and it will invent them. Give it your real resume and the job ad, ask for specific changes, and check every line.

What a ChatGPT resume builder does well, and what it does badly

Good atBad at
Rewriting duties as achievements (“Responsible for billing” → “Resolved about 60 billing queries a day”), when you give it the factsInventing facts: numbers, dates, tools, employers and certificates you never gave it
Shortening a long summary to three linesKnowing your market unless you say which one: Indian, UK and US conventions differ
Matching your wording to a job ad's wordsLayout: a chat reply is text, not a resume file a recruiter or hiring software will read well
First drafts of cover letters and resignation lettersSounding like you: unedited, its letters sound like everyone else's
Spotting weak bullets, repetition and typosJudging what matters to a particular employer, which you learn from the ad and the company

The rule that follows: give it your material and a precise task, never an empty request like “write me a resume for a marketing job”. A resume it writes from nothing is a sample, not yours.

ChatGPT resume prompts you can copy

Replace the parts in square brackets. Paste your real resume text where asked.

  1. Turn duties into achievements.
Here are the bullets from my current job as [title] at [company]. Rewrite each as an achievement: start with an action verb, say what I did and the result. Use only the facts I give; where a number would help and I haven't given one, write [NUMBER?] instead of inventing it. Bullets: [paste]
  2. Write a summary from your resume.
From the resume below, write a professional summary of no more than 50 words: my title and years of experience, my two strongest results, and the skills most relevant to [target job]. No adjectives like “dynamic” or “passionate”. Resume: [paste]
  3. A fresher objective.
I am a [degree, year] looking for a [job title] role. My projects, internships and activities are: [paste]. Write three versions of a two-line career objective that name the job and two of these as proof.
  4. Find the weak spots.
Review this resume as a recruiter hiring a [job title] would. List the five weakest bullets and why, any repeated words, and anything a recruiter would find unclear. Don't rewrite it yet. Resume: [paste]
  5. Shorten to one page.
This resume runs to two pages. Suggest what to cut or merge to fit one page for a [job title] role, keeping the most relevant results. List the cuts; don't remove anything without saying so. Resume: [paste]
  6. A CV for the UK, or a resume for India.
Adapt this resume into a UK-style CV: British spelling, a short personal statement, no photo, date of birth or marital status. Keep every fact as it is. Resume: [paste]

The phrase “use only the facts I give” matters most. Asking it to mark gaps (“[NUMBER?]”) instead of filling them stops the most common problem: confident numbers you can't back up in an interview.

Tailoring a resume to a job ad

This is where the assistant saves the most time. One prompt, with both documents:

Here is a job ad and my resume. (1) List the ad's ten most important requirements and keywords. (2) For each, say whether my resume shows it, and where. (3) Suggest rewrites of my existing bullets to use the ad's wording where it is true for me. Don't add experience I don't have. Job ad: [paste] Resume: [paste]

Then accept the suggestions one by one, by hand. Why the ad's exact wording matters is explained in resume keywords.

Can ChatGPT make an ATS-friendly resume? It can suggest the right words, but whether hiring software reads a resume correctly depends on the file: one column, real text, standard headings, dates beside each job. A chat reply has no layout. Paste the result into a one-column template (see ATS-friendly templates), and check what software reads with the free ATS resume checker.

Cover letter prompts

Write a cover letter for the [job title] role at [company] from the job ad and resume below. Three short paragraphs, under 250 words: why I am writing, two requirements from the ad with one proof each from my resume, and why this company (use this fact about them: [something you know]). Plain, confident language; no clichés like “I am writing to express my interest”. Job ad: [paste] Resume: [paste]

The company fact is the part only you can supply, and it is what makes the letter yours. Then edit it into your own voice, check every claim, and follow the structure in how to write a cover letter. Blank layouts are on the cover letter templates page.

Resignation letter prompt

Write a short, polite resignation letter to my manager [name]. My role is [title] at [company]. My last working day will be [date], which gives [notice period] notice as my contract requires. Offer to help hand over my work. No reasons for leaving, no complaints. Under 150 words.

Check the notice period against your contract, and the date against it. Rules differ by country (in India, the relieving letter matters too): see the resignation letter guide.

Checking what it writes: five questions per line

  1. Is it true? Every number, tool, title and date. Delete anything you didn't do.
  2. Could I explain it in an interview, with the story behind it?
  3. Is it in my market's style? Spelling (organise/organize), CV or resume, what personal details belong.
  4. Does it sound like me? Swap words you would never say.
  5. Is it the same as everyone else's? If a line could be on anyone's resume, replace it with a fact.

An illustrative catch: you paste “Handled customer complaints” and get back “Resolved 95% of customer complaints within 24 hours, improving satisfaction by 30%”. Unless those figures are yours, the original was better. Ask it again with the real numbers.

What to keep private

  • Leave out what the task doesn't need: your phone number, home address, date of birth, ID numbers (Aadhaar, PAN, SSS, SIN) and salary details. Replace your name and employers with placeholders if you prefer; put them back in the final file.
  • Turn off training if you want to. OpenAI's help centre: open Settings, select Data controls, and turn off “Improve the model for everyone”. Then “your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models”; signed in, the setting applies to your account across devices. One exception it notes: if you give feedback on a reply (thumbs up or down), that whole conversation may be used for training.
  • Or use a temporary chat. OpenAI says temporary chats don't appear in your history, aren't used to improve its models, and may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
  • Don't paste your employer's confidential information (client names, internal figures) to get a better bullet.

Getting from a chat to a finished resume file

ChatGPT gives you text. Recruiters and hiring software read a file, and its layout decides whether your name, jobs and dates are read correctly. Two ways to get there:

  • Paste into a template. Copy each section into a CVEmber template (or upload your current resume and edit it there), check it, and download a PDF or Word file. The structure and the parser-tested layout come with the template; the method is on how we test our templates.
  • Connect CVEmber to ChatGPT. With CVEmber Pro, you can add CVEmber in ChatGPT's settings (on the web, with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu) and then ask in the chat: “Here is this job: tailor my resume to it.” The tailored version is saved in your CVEmber account as its own resume, ready to check and download. Setup steps are on connect CVEmber to ChatGPT.

The same prompts on this page work in other AI assistants, such as Claude or Gemini; only the menus differ.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is the best prompt for ChatGPT for resume writing?

One that gives it your real material and a precise job, and forbids invention: "Rewrite these bullets as achievements, starting with an action verb. Use only the facts I give; where a number would help, write [NUMBER?] instead of inventing one." Then paste your bullets.

Can ChatGPT make me a resume?

It can write the text, especially from your existing resume or notes. It can't know your real achievements unless you tell it, and a chat reply is not a laid-out file. Paste its draft into a template, check every line, and download a PDF.

Can ChatGPT write me a cover letter?

It writes a good first draft if you give it the job ad, your resume and one real reason you want this employer. Edit it into your own voice and check every claim; unedited, its letters read like everyone else's.

Can ChatGPT create a CV?

Yes, as text: ask it to adapt your resume into a CV for your country (for the UK: British spelling, a personal statement, no photo or date of birth). Then put it into a CV template for the layout.

How should a 2026 CV look?

Much as it has: one or two pages, one clean column, standard headings, your latest job first, results in each bullet, and wording matched to the job ad.
