Canadian resume format

The Canadian resume format is one to two pages, reverse-chronological, with no photo, date of birth, marital status or Social Insurance Number. Use Canadian spelling, results with numbers, and, if you're a newcomer, a line on your work authorization. The sample below is a newcomer to Canada.

Applying from abroad: biodata to Canadian resume

A biodata or a resume with a photo, age, height, religion and civil status doesn't fit the Canadian resume format: Human rights law bars discrimination on grounds such as age, religion and marital status, so employers don't expect them: the Canadian Human Rights Act (s. 3) covers federally regulated employers such as banks and airlines, and each province has its own human rights code for other employers. To turn it into a Canadian style resume:

  • Delete the photo and personal details; keep name, city and province (or “Relocating to Winnipeg, MB”), phone, email and LinkedIn.
  • Write your status plainly: “Permanent resident”, “Open work permit, valid to Mar 2028” or “Post-graduation work permit, valid to Jun 2027”. If your permit names one employer, say so, because a new employer may need its own approval.
  • Explain BPO work in one line: the account's country and industry, the call volume, the team size.
  • Get your degree assessed: an educational credential assessment checks that a foreign degree is valid and equal to a Canadian one, and World Education Services (WES) is one of the organizations IRCC designates (IRCC).

For newcomers

  • Say where you worked abroad and what the company does in a few words; Canadian recruiters may not know it.
  • Mention a credential assessment (for example WES) next to foreign degrees.
  • Show any Canadian experience, volunteering or courses first.
  • Keep to Canadian conventions: no photo, age or family details.

ATS at Canadian employers

Many larger employers use applicant tracking systems. Use one column and standard headings, and mirror the job posting's skills. Check it with the free ATS checker.

Section by section

  1. Contact: name, phone, email, city and province, LinkedIn.
  2. Summary or highlights: three to five lines or bullets with results.
  3. Experience: employer, city, title, dates and achievements with numbers.
  4. Education: degree, institution, year; credential assessment for foreign degrees.
  5. Skills, certifications and languages: including French level if you have it.

Common mistakes in Canada

  • A photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
  • A long international CV format with personal details.
  • Non-Canadian spelling (color, center) on applications to government or bilingual employers.
  • Foreign job titles without context; add what the company does and the team size.

When you move on

The Canadian resignation letter covers notice, vacation pay and your Record of Employment.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is a Canadian CV format PDF the same as a Canadian resume?

Yes, it is the same document. Canadian job postings call it a resume, so use that word in the file name. Download a PDF for online applications, or a Word file if the posting asks for one.

Should I put a photo on my resume in Canada?

No. Canadian employers don't expect one, and leaving it off avoids bias on grounds protected by human rights law.

Should I include my SIN on my resume?

No. Give your Social Insurance Number to your employer only after you're hired.

How long should a Canadian resume be?

One page early in your career, two pages with more experience.

How do I change a resume from abroad to the Canadian format?

Remove the photo, age, height, religion and civil status, add your work permit or residency status, explain each employer in a line (for BPO work: the account, the volume and the team size) and list your degree with its credential assessment. Keep it to one or two pages.

Do I need a French resume in Quebec?

For roles that work in French, a French resume is usual. Many Montreal employers also accept English for English-language roles.
