Resume format for Malaysia

Keep a Malaysian resume to one to two pages for most people: a short summary, experience, education (CGPA, and SPM for fresh graduates), skills and languages. Some local employers ask for a photo. Keep your full MyKad (IC) number off it; give expected salary and notice period when the job ad asks.

Fresh graduates

Naming qualifications the MQF way

The Malaysian Qualifications Framework, run by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, has eight levels: certificates at levels 1 to 3, diploma and advanced diploma at 4 and 5, and bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at 6, 7 and 8. A bachelor's degree is level 6 with at least 120 credits. Accredited qualifications are listed on the Malaysian Qualifications Register, so write your programme name and awarding institution exactly as they appear there and on your scroll. If you studied a private or foreign programme, checking the register first saves questions later.

The framework's second edition puts skills, vocational and technical qualifications into one TVET sector next to the academic sector, and a level 4 diploma can come from either. If yours is a TVET diploma or certificate, name it and its level so a recruiter can compare it with an academic one.

Expected salary and notice

If a job ad asks for expected salary and notice period, give a monthly figure in RM on the form or in your cover note; keep the resume itself about what you can do.

Section by section

  1. Contact: name, mobile (+60), email, city and state. No full IC number or home address.
  2. Summary: your role, years and one result, or for graduates the role you want.
  3. Experience: company (Sdn Bhd, Bhd), title, dates, results with numbers.
  4. Education: degree and CGPA; diploma, matriculation, STPM or foundation; SPM for graduates.
  5. Skills and languages: software, certifications and each language with level.

Common mistakes in Malaysia

  • A full MyKad number, date of birth and religion that the employer didn't ask for.
  • A casual photo; use a professional one or none.
  • Listing every co-curricular activity since secondary school.
  • Leaving out an expected salary the ad asks for.

Applying in Bahasa Malaysia

Follow the language of the job advert. If the advert or form is in Bahasa Malaysia, answer in Bahasa Malaysia; if it's in English, use English.

When you resign

The Malaysian resignation letter covers one-month and 24-hour resignations under the Employment Act 1955.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Should I put my IC number on my resume?

No. Give your MyKad number only when you're being hired; keep it off anything you send to many employers.

Should I include a photo on my resume in Malaysia?

Only if the employer asks. Some local employers do; if you add one, use a professional photo.

Should fresh graduates include SPM results?

Yes while they're recent; later, your degree and CGPA are enough.

How long should a Malaysian resume be?

One page for fresh graduates, up to two with experience.
