How many pages should a resume be?
The honest answer is that the number of pages follows what you have to say that matters for this job. A reader scanning a stack of applications rewards a page that reaches the point fast, so the second page has to earn its place. Use the length guide below as a starting point, then adjust to your own history.
| Your situation | Resume length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Student, graduate or first job | One page | There is not enough relevant material for two, and a short page reads as focused |
| Up to about 10 years, one field | One page | Select the strongest roles and results; older or minor ones can go |
| 10 to 20 years, senior or specialist | One page, or two | A second page is fine when it holds recent, senior and quantified results |
| Executive, technical lead, research or medical | Two pages (sometimes more) | Publications, patents, systems or licences may need the room; a CV may follow other norms |
| Changing careers | One page | Show only what transfers, so the story is clear |
| Federal or government application | As the posting specifies | Follow the instructions in the announcement exactly |
Does a resume have to be one page?
No. Nobody enforces it, and a crowded one page at 9 points is worse than a clean two. The one-page habit survives because it protects you from two real problems: padding with old or minor jobs, and burying your best results on page two where the reader may not arrive. If you have enough relevant material, such as five or more years in a field with measurable outcomes, go to two pages and put your strongest material on the first. If the second page would hold only a few lines, cut back and keep one page; a page and a half looks like an accident.
Screening software does not penalise a second page. The risk is to the human reader, who forms a view from the top third of page one. Make that area carry your name, a target line and your best result.
What to cut to fit a one page resume
Work from the bottom of the value list up. First go the roles older than about ten to fifteen years, unless they are your most relevant. Next the duties that anyone in the job would have, such as “answered phones”, then the weakest bullet in each role so that every job keeps three to five. After that, merge short jobs at the same employer into one entry, drop “references available” and the objective line, and shorten education to the degree, school and year. Only then should you touch margins (not below 0.5 inch) or font size (not below 10 points). Layout tricks cannot rescue content that is too long, and the font choices are covered in the best font for a resume.
One page resume example, and how a two page one splits

That fits one page with room to spare, because every bullet is a result and the early role has only two. A senior applicant's two page resume is organised differently, as the split below shows for a fictional engineering manager with 17 years of experience.
Page one: Marcus Bell, engineering manager
Summary: “Engineering manager, 17 years in payments software; led teams of up to 22 and shipped four platform migrations.”
Key results: cut payment failures by 31% · reduced cloud cost by $400,000 a year · grew the team from 9 to 22 with 90% retention
Experience: Director of Engineering, 2020 to present (5 bullets) · Engineering Manager, 2015 to 2020 (4 bullets)
Page two
Earlier roles in two lines each: Senior Engineer, 2011 to 2015 · Software Engineer, 2008 to 2011
Education: M.S. Computer Science, 2008 · Certifications: cloud architect, 2022 · Selected projects: payments ledger rewrite (2019), open-source contributor
Page one could stand alone if page two were lost, and page two holds only material that adds to the story. The same logic applies to a resume outline: decide the order of parts first, then see how many pages they take.
When a second page is right, and how to build a two page resume
A second page is right when it contains material a reader of this job would want: recent senior roles, quantified results, relevant licences, a short list of publications or projects. Fill at least a third of it, put your name and a page number in a small footer, and begin it with a section rather than half of a job. Keep every date and heading style identical to page one. If you use a 2 page resume template, check that nothing important is stranded at the bottom of page one and that a bullet does not break across the page. The US resume format page shows the sections in their usual order.
One page resume format for India and the UK
The answer is the same in both: one page for a fresher or someone early in a career, two for experienced applicants. In India a one page resume template for a fresher usually puts education, projects and skills first, as shown in the fresher resume format. In the UK a CV is often two pages, and a one page CV is common for school leavers and graduates; see the UK CV format for how the sections run there.
