CV format for freshers: is it different?

No. In India a fresher's CV and a fresher's resume are the same one-page document, and recruiters use the words interchangeably. Use the format on this page whichever word the job advert uses; only academic and research jobs expect a longer CV with publications.

Writing the career objective

Two lines, specific to the job: the degree you have, the role you want and one thing you bring. “Commerce graduate looking for an accounts executive role, with Tally and GST filing practice from a six-month articleship” beats “To work in a challenging environment”. More examples: career objective for a resume.

No work experience? Use these instead

  • Internships, even short or unpaid ones, with what you delivered.
  • Final-year and mini projects, with the tools and a result.
  • Hackathons, competitions and certifications (NPTEL, Oracle, Google, AWS, NISM, Tally).
  • College roles: placement coordinator, club lead, fest organiser, NSS or NCC.
  • Part-time or family-business work: counter sales, tuition, accounts help.

What to lead with, by degree

  • B.Tech / BE / BCA / MCA: projects and skills first, then internships; link GitHub.
  • B.Com / BBA / MBA: internships, Excel and Tally, any articleship or live project.
  • BA / B.Sc: the subject skills the job needs, research or field projects, languages.
  • Diploma and ITI: trade, apprenticeship, machines and tools you have used.

IT freshers: skills and projects before education

For IT roles the first question is “can this person write code we can use?”. A grouped skills block (languages, frameworks, databases, tools: only what you can answer interview questions on) and two or three projects answer it in seconds; keep education with CGPA below them.

  • Project line: name, stack, what it does and one result, for example “Expense tracker (React, Node.js): deployed on Render; 40 classmates used it for a semester.” Link the repository. A project someone used beats three tutorial clones.
  • B.Tech / BE (CSE, IT, ECE): DSA and core subjects count; add competitive-programming ratings if good.
  • BCA / MCA / B.Sc IT: projects and internships carry more weight; deployed apps help.
  • Non-CS graduates moving into IT: a short course plus projects; say so plainly in the objective.
  • Avoid: skill-level bars, a dead GitHub link or empty repositories, and a list of everything you touched once.

For campus placement drives

Use the format your placement cell gives if there is one. Otherwise keep it to one page, put CGPA and backlogs (if the company asks) exactly as your marksheet shows, and bring printed copies to the drive. Mass recruiters read these resumes through hiring software, so a single-column layout is safest.

Fresher mistakes to avoid

  • A generic objective copied from the internet.
  • Listing every subject you studied. Name the ones the job uses.
  • Hobbies that fill space (“listening to music”). Keep one or two that show something.
  • Spelling mistakes in your own email address or college name.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is the best resume format for freshers in India?

One page, reverse-chronological, with a career objective, education (CGPA, Class XII and X), internships, projects, skills, certifications and a declaration.

How do I write a resume with no experience?

Lead with education and projects, then internships, certifications, competitions and college roles. Give each a result: users, marks, rank or time saved.

Should a fresher put Class X and XII marks?

Yes. Many campus recruiters set minimum Class X and XII percentages in their eligibility rules. Give the board, year and percentage.

Is a career objective needed for freshers?

It helps when it's specific: the role you want and what you bring, in two lines. Skip it if it would be generic.

Can a fresher's resume be two pages?

Keep it to one. If you have more, cut school activities and repeated skills before going to a second page.

Should I add a photo to my fresher resume?

Only if the placement cell or the employer asks for one.
