Accountant & Accounting Resume Examples
An accountant keeps a business's books correct and on time: recording transactions, reconciling bank and vendor accounts, preparing sales tax and payroll tax filings, closing the month, and producing the statements that managers, auditors and tax authorities rely on. An accountant resume should prove skills such as tally Prime / ERP 9, SAP FICO or SAP Business One and zoho Books / QuickBooks with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does an accountant do?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that accountants and auditors typically need at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and many become Certified Public Accountants. Your resume should name the accounting system, the closes and filings you own, and a number on every line.
Accountant resume format and template
- Use a one-column, reverse-chronological format: applicant tracking systems read it cleanly.
- Name the software exactly as the posting does (QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Xero).
- Put numbers in every bullet: states filed in, vendors reconciled, days to close.
- The resume format for an accountant job with experience leads with the closes and filings you own; an entry-level page leads with education and internships.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

How do I write an entry-level accounting resume?
Lead with your accounting degree, GPA if it is 3.0 or higher, and your CPA plan, then an internship or tax-season job with counts: transactions posted, clients reconciled, filings prepared. Add QuickBooks or Excel skills and any certificate. One page is enough, and the first sample above shows the order.
What are the most important skills to list for an accountant?
An accounting system such as QuickBooks, NetSuite or SAP, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliation, month-end close, sales tax or payroll tax filings, and Excel. Name them the way the job posting does and give each a number, such as vendors reconciled or days to close.
Should I mention the CPA exam on my resume?
Yes. Write "CPA" with the state board and year if you hold the license. If you are still working toward it, write "CPA candidate" and the exam sections you have passed, for example "passed AUD and FAR, 2026".
How do accountant CV formats differ for UK jobs?
UK employers ask for a CV of up to two pages, so the accountant CV format adds a short profile, your ACCA, ACA or CIMA stage and UK software such as Xero or Sage. Accounting CV examples from the UK drop the photo and date of birth; any plain CV template for an accountant works in that order. A covering letter for the accountant job goes with it.
How do senior accountant, staff accountant and tax accountant resumes differ?
A staff accountant resume shows reconciliations, journal entries and the close tasks you own. A senior accountant resume adds review, mentoring and process improvements with days saved or errors cut. A tax accountant resume shows returns prepared, filings, notices handled and the tax software you use, plus credentials such as a CPA or EA.
