What the official job profile lists for an accountant
India's National Qualification Register lists a Corporate Accountant qualification at NSQF Level 5, aligned to NCO-2015 code 2411.0100. It describes the job as keeping a company's financial records in line with regulations, laws and policies. The duties it names are preparing financial documents, presenting annual audits, preparing monthly budgets, monitoring expenditure and managing cash flow.
The course is built from six core modules: accounting, Tally, TDS, GST, office automation and corporate communication, plus 60 hours of on-the-job training. Its assessment asks trainees to record transactions by double entry, prepare the three financial statements, reconcile bank statements and ledgers, run payroll and inventory in Tally, file GST returns, generate e-way bills and e-invoices, and build MIS reports in a spreadsheet. The career path it shows runs from senior accountant to accounts manager, so the skills on your resume should show where you sit on that path.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Accounting and tax skills for an accountant resume
- GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9): India's Corporate Accountant qualification names GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-9 among the returns a trainee must learn to file. Say which ones you filed, for how many GSTINs and how often, so the recruiter can judge the load. Example: Filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for 3 GSTINs every month for two years with zero late fees.
- TDS returns and Form 16: Deducting tax at the right rate, depositing it and filing quarterly e-TDS returns. The qualification's TDS module also covers the interest charged on late payment, so a clean record of on-time filing is the proof that counts. Example: Prepared quarterly TDS returns for 140 employees and issued Form 16 by the 15 June deadline.
- Bank and vendor reconciliation: Matching your books to bank statements and supplier ledgers, then clearing the gaps. The qualification lists reconciling bank statements and subsidiary ledgers as a core task. Give the number of accounts and the old differences you cleared. Example: Reconciled 180 vendor accounts monthly and cleared ₹12 lakh of old unmatched entries in one quarter.
- Month-end and year-end close: Posting adjusting entries, closing the ledgers and handing over a trial balance by a fixed day. Adjusting entries and closing procedures are a named outcome in the qualification. Expect to be asked which working day you close on. Example: Closed the books by working day 5 each month and handed the trial balance to the CFO on schedule.
- Accounts payable and receivable: Paying suppliers on agreed terms and collecting from customers on time. Receivable days, overdue amounts and weekly payment runs are numbers any finance manager understands, so quote one of them rather than the phrase alone. Example: Cut average receivable days from 65 to 42 in six months with a weekly Excel ageing report.
- Input tax credit reconciliation: Matching the input tax credit in your books against supplier invoices. The qualification asks trainees to show this matching and to know when credit cannot be claimed. The amount of credit you saved or recovered is the number to give. Example: Recovered ₹38 lakh of input credit by matching GSTR-2B to the purchase register vendor by vendor.
Software skills for an accountant resume
- Tally Prime / ERP 9: Tally is the only accounting package named in the qualification's lab set-up, and its Tally module covers vouchers, GST and TDS, payroll and inventory. Say which of those you actually ran in Tally, not just that you know it. Example: Posted 1,500+ purchase and sales vouchers in Tally Prime for 12 clients during a six-month internship.
- SAP FICO or SAP Business One: Larger companies and multinationals keep their books in an ERP. If the advert names SAP, state the module and the work you did in it, such as vendor payments, period close or standard reports. Example: Moved vendor reconciliation to SAP Business One reports, cutting the monthly task time by 40%.
- Zoho Books / QuickBooks: Cloud accounting tools are common in startups, small firms and practices with overseas clients. Name the product and one piece of set-up you handled yourself, such as bank feeds, invoice templates or tax settings. Example: Set up bank-feed import in Zoho Books for 4 accounts, saving 6 hours of manual posting a week.
- Advanced Excel: The qualification's office automation module asks trainees to build MIS reports and KPI dashboards in a spreadsheet. Name a report you built, who used it and how often, instead of listing functions like VLOOKUP on their own. Example: Built a pivot-table ageing report used by 3 branch managers to chase 90+ day dues each Monday.
Reporting and audit skills for an accountant resume
- Ind AS financial statements: Preparing the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement is a core outcome of the qualification. If your company reports under Ind AS, say so, and say which statements you prepared and for what size of business. Example: Prepared quarterly Ind AS financials for a ₹240 crore business with the audit adjustments under 1% of profit.
- Statutory audit support: The qualification describes the job as including presenting annual audits. Show the schedules you prepared, the queries you answered and how the audit closed, because a hiring manager will ask about the auditor's comments. Example: Prepared 40+ audit schedules; the statutory audit closed with no qualifications two years in a row.
Soft skills for an accountant resume
- Attention to detail: In accounts, one wrong ledger or a missed invoice turns up later as a difference someone has to chase. Prove care with a record: reconciliations with nothing carried forward, or returns filed with no revisions. Example: Kept bank reconciliations for 6 clients at zero carried-forward differences for 6 straight months.
- Deadline discipline: GST, TDS and payroll all run on fixed due dates, and the TDS module covers what late payment costs. A run of dates met with no penalty notices is the cleanest proof you can put on a resume. Example: Met every GST, TDS and advance tax due date across 24 months with no penalty notices.
- Working with auditors: Auditors ask for schedules, vouchers and explanations, often at short notice. The qualification's communication module stresses clear spoken and written answers at work. Say how many queries you handled and how quickly. Example: Answered 120 audit queries within 48 hours each during a four-week statutory audit.
Which accountant skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with Tally, GST and TDS basics, bank reconciliation and Excel. Those are the core modules of the national qualification and what a first interview will test. Use articleship, an internship or a family business to give each one a number: vouchers posted, returns prepared, accounts reconciled. Put any Tally or GST course in certifications with the year.
Experienced: Lead with ownership: the close you run, the statements you sign off, the audits you lead and the people whose work you review. Name the ERP and the size of the books, such as turnover, entities or GSTINs. Then show one thing you improved, like a faster close, recovered tax credit or fewer audit points. That is the step from senior accountant to accounts manager.
Certifications for an accountant resume
- CA Intermediate, CMA Intermediate or ACCA: write the level and year cleared.
- Tally Essential / Tally Prime with GST (Tally Education) · write the level.
- GST Practitioner or GST certification course · name the provider and year.
- SAP FICO certification, if the advert names SAP.
What to leave off an accountant resume
- "Knowledge of accounting" as a skill. Every applicant has it; name the task instead, such as bank reconciliation or GSTR-3B filing.
- Software you only saw in a classroom, listed as if you used it at work. Accounts interviews often include a practical test in Tally or Excel.
- Retired tax names on their own, such as service tax or VAT, unless the job is about old assessments. They make the resume look dated.
- Real client names and exact figures from a confidential ledger. Use rounded amounts and describe the business instead, for example a mid-sized manufacturer.

What skills should I put on an accountant resume?
Start with the hard skills the advert names: usually Tally or an ERP such as SAP or Zoho Books, GST and TDS returns, bank and vendor reconciliation, month-end close and Excel. Add two or three soft skills such as attention to detail and meeting deadlines. Prove the top four in your experience bullets, each with a number.
What skills does a fresher accountant need on a resume?
Tally Prime, GST basics, bank reconciliation, voucher entry and Excel are the usual starting set, and they match the core modules of the national Corporate Accountant qualification. Prove them with internship or articleship numbers: vouchers posted, returns prepared, accounts reconciled. List any Tally or GST course with the provider and the year.
What skills separate a senior accountant resume?
Ownership. A senior accountant runs the monthly close, prepares the financial statements, leads the statutory audit, reviews juniors' work and often manages a small team. Show the size of what you own, such as turnover, entities or GSTINs, and one result, such as closing the books two days sooner.
How many skills should an accountant list?
Eight to twelve in the skills section, most of them hard skills taken from the job advert. A long list of every tax form and software package hides the ones that matter. Prove the top four in your experience bullets, and drop any skill you could not show in a practical test.
What training does an accountant need in India?
The national Corporate Accountant qualification on the National Qualification Register asks for a completed UG diploma in the BBA or B.Com stream, or an earlier NSQF Level 4 qualification plus three years of experience, and a minimum age of 18. Its course runs 570 hours, including 60 on the job. List CA, CMA or ACCA levels separately with the year.
