Banker & Banking Skills for Your Resume
Banks read a banking skills resume for three things: can you grow business (accounts, deposits, loans, fee income), can you keep customers, and can you do it within KYC, AML and RBI rules. Below: 12 skills grouped by type, each with an example bullet.

What the official job profile lists for a banker
Canada's Job Bank splits bank work into two profiles. Bank tellers (NOC 64400) process cash deposits and withdrawals, cheques, transfers and bill payments, open accounts, answer questions about accounts and fix discrepancies, and tell customers about products that suit them. Job Bank rates instructing, digital literacy, numeracy, active listening and persuading as their main skills, and names attention to detail and concern for others as highly important. The US O*NET profile for tellers adds balancing the cash drawer at the end of each shift and checking signatures and endorsements on cheques.
Personal bankers fall under financial sales representatives (NOC 63102). Their duties move into selling and credit: opening accounts, interviewing loan applicants, promoting deposit, investment and loan products, studying an applicant's finances and ability to repay, completing loan paperwork and following up on overdue accounts. Job Bank rates monitoring and persuading at a high level for this group, and lists attention to detail as extremely important. That mix of selling and checking is what a banker's skills section has to prove.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Sales and relationships skills for a banker resume
- Account opening and KYC: Opening new personal and business accounts heads Canada's Job Bank duty list for personal bankers. Give the number of accounts and say whether any were held back for missing documents. Example: Opened 64 savings accounts with full KYC in an 8-week internship.
- CASA growth: Current and savings balances are the cheap deposits a branch lives on, so branch heads track them closely. Quote your rank in the branch or region and the period it covers. Example: Led the branch in CASA for 5 quarters as a personal banker.
- Relationship management: Owning a set of customers over years, not one sale. Recruiters want the book size, the number of clients and how much it grew, with the time frame stated. Example: Grew a 220-family priority book 34% in two years.
- Cross-selling: Job Bank lists promoting deposit, investment, credit and loan products as a core duty. Show it as a target met, and name the products you sold so the reader sees you advised within your licence. Example: Reached 140% of the FY26 fee income target through insurance and mutual funds.
Credit skills for a banker resume
- Credit appraisal: Job Bank's profile has personal bankers research an applicant's finances, references, credit and ability to repay, then recommend approval or rejection. Give the file count and your turnaround time. Example: Appraised 120 MSME loan files a year with 95% sanctioned within 15 days.
- MSME and retail lending: Interviewing applicants for personal, mortgage, student and business loans is on the same duty list. Name the loan types you handled and the growth, so a lender sees the segment you know. Example: Grew MSME lending 45% in three years at a ₹900 crore branch.
- NPA recovery: Preparing statements on overdue accounts and passing the hard ones to collectors is part of the role. A falling bad-loan ratio, with start and end figures, is the clearest proof. Example: Cut gross NPA from 4.2% to 1.6% with a structured recovery drive.
- Lead referral: Freshers and tellers rarely sanction loans, but they spot customers who need one. Show how many leads you passed on and how many turned into business. Example: Referred 11 home-loan leads from walk-ins, with 3 disbursed in 8 weeks.
Operations and compliance skills for a banker resume
- AML and KYC compliance: Checking identity and flagging unusual transactions protects the bank and you. Audit results are the evidence hiring managers trust, so state how many audits and what they found. Example: Kept zero KYC audit observations across 4 audits.
- Core banking (Finacle): The system where deposits, withdrawals and transfers are posted. Name the platform; a bank using a different one will still see you can learn its screens quickly. Example: Processed 50+ transactions a day in Finacle during the quarter-end rush.
- Branch leadership: Running staff, cash and audits at one site. Give team size and the result of the last inspection or audit, since that is what a regional head checks first. Example: Lead 22 staff and earned a clean RBI inspection.
- Branch growth: Total deposits and loans at a branch over time. Quote the starting and ending business and the years, so the reader can judge the pace for that market. Example: Grew branch business from ₹700 crore to ₹900 crore in three years.
Which banker skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with accuracy and service. A teller or junior personal banker is trusted with cash and customer records from day one, so show balanced cash, accounts opened without errors and the products you can explain. Add digital comfort with banking software and any licence or diploma in progress. Keep sales claims small and real: leads referred, accounts opened, customers served a day.
Experienced: Lead with your book and your credit judgement: clients managed, balances grown, targets met, loan files appraised and how they performed. Then show control: audit results, KYC quality and the people you trained or led. Banks promote people who grow business without creating risk, so pair every sales number with one sign that the business was clean.
Certifications for a banker resume
- NISM Series V-A (mutual funds).
- IRDAI insurance licence.
- JAIIB and CAIIB (IIBF).
What to leave off a banker resume
- Promised returns or phrases like "assured growth". Advice roles are licensed and audited, and this wording worries compliance reviewers.
- Customer names, account numbers or client balances tied to a person. Use totals only; a resume is not a safe place for client data.
- Sales numbers with no period or base. "Sold ₹5 crore" means little until the reader knows over what time and against which target.
- Licences you have not yet passed. Write "exam booked for March" instead, since banks check registration before you can sell.
Action words that show banker skills

What skills should a banker put on a resume?
Cover three groups. Sales and relationships: account opening, deposit growth, cross-selling and client reviews. Credit: appraisal, lending and recovery. Operations: KYC and anti-money-laundering checks, your core banking system and audit results. Put a number on each, such as accounts opened, book size or audit findings.
What banking skills do freshers need?
Customer service, numeracy, digital comfort, product knowledge and a willingness to sell. Canada's Job Bank rates numeracy, digital literacy, active listening and persuading as moderate-level skills for bank tellers. Back them with an internship, part-time cash work or any licence you already hold.
Which skills matter for relationship managers?
Book growth, client reviews, product advice that fits each client, fee income and clean compliance. Job Bank lists proposing solutions for goals such as debt management and investment as a core duty, so show one client problem you solved, not only the target you hit.
How do I show banking skills with numbers?
Use the figures your manager already tracks: accounts opened, deposits or book size, targets reached as a percentage, loan files handled and turnaround time, bad-loan ratio before and after, and audit observations. Always give the period, because a number with no time frame is hard to judge.
Do I need a licence to work as a banker in Canada?
For tellers, Job Bank says the job is not regulated, high school is required and training is given on the job. Personal bankers are different: Job Bank says a mutual funds licence and registration with the provincial securities regulator are usually required, along with a loan or credit training program.
What bank teller skills belong on a resume?
Bank teller resume skills include cash handling and balancing, transaction accuracy, customer service, identity and fraud checks, and the banking system you use. Resume skills for bank teller roles should each carry a number, such as transactions a day or drawer accuracy. Bank resume skills for later roles add loans, sales and compliance.
