What does a buyer do?

BLS describes buyers and purchasing agents as people who "evaluate suppliers, negotiate contracts, and review the quality of products": comparing suppliers on price, quality and speed of delivery, visiting their plants, analyzing price proposals and negotiating contracts. In manufacturing a buyer raises purchase orders for raw materials and parts against production needs; in retail a buyer chooses and orders the product range for a category within an open-to-buy budget. A buyer resume should show the spend you manage, the number of suppliers, savings against the last price and on-time delivery.

Buyer duties to put on a resume

  • Evaluate suppliers on price, quality and speed of delivery, and visit their plants or warehouses.
  • Send requests for quotation, analyze price proposals and choose suppliers.
  • Negotiate prices, payment terms and contracts.
  • Raise purchase orders and follow up on deliveries, shortages and quality problems.
  • Keep stock at planned levels, working with production planning or merchandise planning.
  • Track spend, savings and supplier performance and report them each month.

Best resume format for a buyer

  • Lead with spend managed, supplier count and savings in the summary.
  • Say what you buy (castings, packaging, apparel) and for which kind of company.
  • For retail buying, show margin, sell-through and markdowns; for manufacturing, show savings and on-time delivery.

FAQ

Buyer resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What is the difference between a buyer and a purchasing agent?

BLS groups them together: both evaluate suppliers, negotiate contracts and review product quality. In practice, buyer is the usual title in retail and wholesale, where you buy goods to resell, while purchasing agent is more common for materials and services a company uses itself.

How do I write a buyer resume with no buying experience?

Start from a purchasing assistant, inventory or supply chain internship role. Show purchase orders raised, quotes compared, deliveries chased and any supplier scorecard you built. BLS says new buyers get a few months of on-the-job training, so your degree and Excel or ERP skills carry weight.

Do buyers need a certification?

No. BLS describes certification in procurement or supply chain management as optional. It can help for senior or strategic sourcing roles. If you hold one, list its full name, the issuing body and the year.

Which skills matter most on a resume for a procurement buyer?

Strategic sourcing, RFQs, negotiation, supplier evaluation, spend analysis and an ERP such as SAP or Oracle, plus strong Excel. Show each in a line with a number: suppliers qualified, savings, delivery rate or inventory reduced.
