What does a customer service do?
The work covers handling returns and complaints, taking orders, processing payments and recording each contact in a CRM or ticketing tool. In the US, representatives work in nearly all industries, with retail trade and insurance carriers the largest employers, and most work full time. Your customer service resume should show the same things: volume handled, problems solved and the tools you used. A customer service representative resume and its supervisor, manager, specialist and call center variants differ in the scale you manage and the metrics you show.
Customer Service job description for a resume
- Listen to customers' questions and concerns and provide answers or solutions.
- Handle returns, refunds and complaints, exchanging merchandise or adjusting bills where policy allows.
- Take orders and process payments over the phone, by chat or in person.
- Keep records of each customer interaction or transaction in a CRM or ticketing system.
- Give customers information about products or services by phone, email, chat or in person.
- Escalate issues you cannot solve at first contact to a supervisor or specialist team.
- Follow up with customers until the case is closed and note the outcome.
Customer Service resume format and template
- Put targets beside results: CSAT, first-contact resolution, handle time and tickets a day.
- Mention the channel (calls, chat, email) and the industry (retail, insurance, telecom, e-commerce).
- List customer service duties on your resume as results, not tasks. Keep it to one page for under five years of experience, in a simple one-column layout.
- Use a customer service resume template with plain headings so applicant tracking systems read every section.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is typically needed to enter the occupation (BLS).
- Training is short-term on the job and typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks (BLS); list the CRM or phone system you were trained on.
- Representatives who give information about finance and insurance may need a state license (BLS). List it only if you hold it, with the state, and check the job posting for what the employer requires.
Applying for customer service jobs in India
- Write your languages with the level for each: English, Hindi and a regional language are all filters on Indian job portals.
- State shift flexibility (rotational, night) and notice period or immediate joining.
- Add typing speed and any voice and accent training for call centre and BPO roles.
- On Naukri, use a headline such as "Customer Service Executive | Voice | Chat | CRM".
- In India and the UK the document is called a CV: a cv template for customer service in one column with plain headings works the same way, and so does a cv customer service template with your languages and shifts near the top.
- Freshers can add a career objective, Class XII and graduation percentages and a declaration with place and date; US employers do not expect these.

FAQ
Customer Service resume questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
What are customer service skills for a resume?
Pair hard skills with soft ones. Hard: CRM or ticketing tools, phone and chat support, refund processing, typing speed and Excel. Soft: patience, active listening, empathy and clear writing. Put the tools in a skills section and show the soft skills through results in your bullets.
How do I write a customer service job description for a resume?
Turn each duty into a short line with a number: answering questions, handling returns and complaints, taking orders and payments, and recording contacts in a CRM. BLS lists these as the core tasks, so use them as a base and add your own volumes and results.
Should I write a customer service resume objective?
Use a summary if you have experience. If you are changing careers or have none, a one-line objective naming the role and what you bring, such as bilingual support and 45 wpm typing, is fine. Keep it under two lines and tailor it to the job posting.
How do I show customer service experience on a resume?
Use CSAT, first-contact resolution, average handle time, tickets a day and SLA compliance. If you have no scores, give volume: customers helped a day, returns processed a week or accounts handled. Name the channel and the tool beside each line.
Do customer service jobs need a license or certification?
Usually not. BLS says a high school diploma or equivalent is typically enough, with 2 to 4 weeks of on-the-job training. Representatives who give finance or insurance information may need a state license, so check the job posting and list yours only if you hold it.
How do customer service manager, supervisor and specialist resumes differ?
Customer service supervisor resume examples show the team size and shift coverage. Customer service manager resume examples add budget, quality scores and hiring. A specialist resume shows complex cases and product depth, so use the version that matches the scope you actually hold.
