What does a production manager do?

BLS reports that industrial production managers mostly work full time, split between office work and the production floor, and some work nights or weekends or stay on call. A production manager resume should show the output, team and cost you are responsible for.

Production Manager duties to put on a resume

  • Decide how best to use the plant's workers and equipment to meet production goals.
  • Make sure production stays on schedule and within budget.
  • Hire, train and evaluate workers.
  • Monitor workers for performance and safety requirements.
  • Streamline the production process.
  • Report output, cost and quality to plant leadership.

Best resume format for a production manager

  • Open with the scale you run: output, plants or lines, staff and budget.
  • Show before and after numbers: efficiency, rejects, cost, on-time delivery and safety incidents.
  • Keep it to one page under ten years of experience; two pages are normal for plant managers.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Production Manager resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How do I move from supervisor to production manager on my resume?

Show leadership beyond the shift: scheduling, cost control, hiring and improvement projects, with numbers. BLS says production managers need years of supervisory or leadership experience, so list team size, lines and results at each step.

Do production managers need a degree?

Most employers want one. BLS says production managers typically need a bachelor's degree, often in business administration or industrial engineering, though some rise from the production floor with years of experience. Put the degree and year in your education block, and if you came up through the line, put supervisor experience first.
