Manufacturing Engineer Resume Examples & Format

A manufacturing engineer makes a factory produce more good parts at lower cost. A manufacturing engineer resume should prove skills such as lean manufacturing and 5S, root cause analysis (8D, 5 Why, fishbone), and PFMEA and control plans with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a manufacturing engineer do?

O*NET lists the top tasks as troubleshooting product problems in designs, materials or processes; resolving bottlenecks and material variances; improving processes to cut cost; applying lean manufacturing and other continuous improvement methods; and bringing in new manufacturing methods. Day to day that means writing work instructions, designing fixtures and line layouts, running time studies, launching new products onto the line, and working with quality and maintenance on scrap and downtime. A resume should show the processes you own (machining, assembly, molding, welding), and before-and-after numbers for cycle time, scrap, yield, throughput and cost.

Manufacturing Engineer duties to put on a resume

  • Troubleshoot product and process problems involving designs, materials or methods.
  • Find and remove bottlenecks, scrap and material variances on the line.
  • Apply lean and continuous improvement methods to raise quality and cut cost.
  • Write work instructions, PFMEAs and control plans, and design fixtures and tooling.
  • Launch new products and equipment into production and validate the processes.
  • Work with quality, maintenance and production teams on daily issues.

Best resume format for a manufacturing engineer

  • Name the processes you own (stamping, machining, molding, assembly) in the headline.
  • Give before-and-after numbers for scrap, cycle time, OEE, yield and cost.
  • List your industry's standards (PPAP, ISO 13485, AS9100) only where you have used them.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications

  • O*NET reports that 76% of manufacturing engineers surveyed say a bachelor's degree is required and 16% an associate's degree. Mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering are the usual majors.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license is optional for most plant roles. For industrial engineers, BLS describes the path: a bachelor's degree in engineering, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, several years of relevant work and passing the PE exam.
  • Lean or Six Sigma training is worth listing with the provider and year when you can point to a project that used it.

FAQ

Manufacturing Engineer resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What are strong manufacturing engineer resume bullet points?

Each starts with a verb, names the process and ends with a number: "Cut scrap on 4 stamping presses by 38%, saving $620,000 a year" or "Rebalanced a 6-station cell, cutting cycle time from 11 to 9 minutes". Avoid lines that only say you supported production.

Do manufacturing engineers need a PE license?

Usually not for plant roles; it helps for consulting, facilities design or senior positions that sign off engineering work. BLS describes the path for industrial engineers as an engineering degree, the FE exam, several years of work and the PE exam, with each state issuing its own license.

How do I write a resume for manufacturing engineer jobs as a graduate?

Lead with co-ops, internships and senior design projects that touched a real line: time studies, fixtures, work instructions, a scrap or cycle-time change. Add CAD, GD&T and lean basics, and keep it to one page. O*NET shows most employers expect a bachelor's degree.

What is the difference between a manufacturing engineer and a process engineer?

The titles overlap, and O*NET lists Process Engineer as a sample title for manufacturing engineers. In many plants a process engineer focuses on one process, such as molding or welding, while a manufacturing engineer covers the whole line, layout and product launches.

What should a manufacturing resume show for engineering roles?

A manufacturing resume for engineering roles shows process improvements with cycle time, yield or cost results, tools such as CAD, Lean and Six Sigma, and plant or line size. Name the products and volumes, and any safety or quality results.
