What does a welder do?

They set up equipment, prepare joints, choose the right process such as MIG, TIG or stick welding, and inspect the finished weld for defects. Welders work in fabrication shops, shipyards, oil and gas, power plants and construction, so the resume should name the processes, positions and materials you are qualified in.

Best resume format for a welder

  • Name each process (stick, MIG, TIG), each position (3G, 4G, 6G) and the code you are qualified under.
  • Mention the material: mild steel, stainless, alloy or aluminum.
  • Keep it to one page with large, plain text; shop supervisors screen it quickly, so lead with your qualifications.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Welder resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

Should a welder list 6G or 3G on a resume?

Yes, with the process and the code, for example "6G TIG, ASME IX" or "3G and 4G, AWS D1.1". Supervisors and applicant tracking systems search these terms directly, and the date tells them how current your test is.

How do I list a welding certificate on a resume?

Put it under certifications with the position, process, code and year, such as "AWS D1.1, 3G and 4G, 2024". If it was an employer test, say which employer. Only list tests you have passed; a test in progress can be written as in progress.

What do I put if I have no welding experience?

Lead with your certificate, your lab or shop hours, the positions you passed and any helper or fit-up work. Name the processes and materials you practiced, and add safety cards. Hours and joint counts show a hiring shop what you can already do.

What goes on a welding resume, and how do welding resume examples differ?

A welding resume lists your processes (MIG, TIG, stick), positions, materials and certifications such as AWS, then projects with joint types and inspection results. Welding resume examples for entry level lead with school hours and tests passed; experienced examples add shop or site type, weld volume and pass rate on inspection.
