Handyman Resume Examples & Format

A handyman fixes and maintains homes, apartments, offices and stores: patching drywall, replacing faucets and fixtures, hanging doors, swapping switches and outlets, painting, assembling furniture and handling the small jobs a full trade crew would not take. A handyman resume should prove skills such as carpentry and finish work, drywall repair and texture, and interior and exterior painting with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

FAQ

Handyman resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What are the best handyman skills to put on a resume?

Carpentry, drywall repair, painting, fixture plumbing, light electrical, tile repair, assembly and preventive maintenance, plus estimating and invoicing if you work for yourself. Add the soft skills that customers mention in reviews: showing up on time, explaining the fix and leaving the site clean.

How do I put self-employed handyman work on a resume?

List your business name, or "Self-employed handyman", as the employer with your city and dates. Then show scale and quality: jobs a year, the kinds of repairs, your review rating, repeat or referral share and callback rate. A customer reference or two can stand in for a manager.

Does a handyman need a license?

It depends on the work and the state. BLS notes that electrical or plumbing work may require a state license. Many handymen stick to repairs that do not, so check your state's contractor and trade rules and list only work you are allowed to do.

What is the handyman job description for a resume?

Diagnosing and repairing walls, doors, floors, fixtures and furniture; replacing faucets, switches and light fixtures within license limits; painting and patching; preventive maintenance; and giving estimates and keeping job records. Turn each into a line with a count or result.

How do I move from handyman to a maintenance technician job?

Show building systems work: HVAC filters, water heaters, appliances, work-order volume and completion times. EPA requires Section 608 certification for anyone who services equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants, so list it if you hold it.
