Engineering Student Resume Examples

An engineer researches, designs, builds and tests products, machines and systems, and engineering resume examples for students show how to prove you can do that work before your first job. An engineering student resume should prove skills such as branch core skills (CAD, circuits or structures), CAD: SolidWorks, AutoCAD and simulation: ANSYS, MATLAB with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does an engineering student do?

Engineers generally work in offices and in teams with other engineers, and sometimes visit worksites to look at a problem or a piece of equipment. A bachelor's degree is the usual entry requirement, so as a student your resume needs projects, internships or co-ops, technical skills for your branch and the results you achieved.

Engineering Student resume format and template

  • Put projects and internships above coursework, and give each project one number: accuracy, weight, cost, rank.
  • Keep it to one page; match the job posting's software and tools in your skills line.
  • Make two versions if you apply to different branches or to core and software roles, each leading with the matching projects.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Summary examples by level

  • Entry-level: Second-year mechanical engineering student with two build projects and a robotics club role, seeking a summer internship in product design.
  • Mid-level: Senior mechanical engineering student and SAE design lead with two co-op terms, including a fixture redesign that cut setup time by 30%.
  • Senior: Recent electrical engineering graduate with two embedded internships and a student paper, who extended a sensor's battery life from 3 to 11 months.

Work experience bullet points

  • Designed a robot gripper in SolidWorks that lifted 1.5 kg with a 95% pick success rate over 100 trials.
  • Machined 12 aluminum parts for a team of 5 and cut assembly weight by 18%.
  • Led chassis and suspension design for a 25-member SAE team that placed 14th of 90.

Education and certifications

  • A bachelor's degree in your engineering branch is the standard entry requirement (BLS). Give the degree, university, expected graduation and GPA if it helps.
  • Internships and co-ops are worth their own section: some 5-year or even 6-year cooperative plans combine classroom study with practical work (BLS).
  • Professional engineer licensure needs an accredited degree, the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, relevant work experience (typically at least 4 years) and the PE exam (BLS). List an exam only if you have passed it.

Applying for engineering student jobs in India

  • In India, show CGPA, Class XII and X marks; placement cells filter on them.
  • Mention NPTEL certificates and industrial training.
  • List competitions (SAE, hackathons, robotics) with ranks.
  • Add a declaration for PSU and traditional recruiters.

FAQ

Engineering Student resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How do I write an entry level engineering resume with no experience?

Lead with projects: what you built, the tools you used and one number each. Add co-ops, labs, competitions and club work. For an entry level engineering resume, keep the summary to two lines and list skills the job posting names.

What is a good resume objective for engineering students?

Say the role, your branch and one proof point in two lines. For example: "Second-year mechanical engineering student seeking a summer internship in product design, with two build projects." A resume objective for engineering works best for students with little experience.

Which engineering skills should a resume list?

List engineering skills in the order the job posting uses them: CAD such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, simulation, programming in Python or C, testing and measurement, and documentation. Add teamwork and presentation skills beside the results that prove them.

Is there a template for an engineering resume?

Yes. A simple engineering resume template runs: contact line, objective or summary, education, projects, internships or co-ops, skills, activities. Use one column and plain headings. A CV template engineer applicants in the UK use follows the same order.

How is a mechanical engineering resume different from an electrical one?

A mechanical engineering resume leads with CAD, manufacturing and design projects, while an electrical one leads with circuits, firmware and test work. Use the second example above for mechanical engineering resume examples, and the same layout as a mechanical engineer sample resume, then swap in your own branch's tools.

Do UK employers want a CV for engineering?

Yes. In the UK a CV is the same document as a resume, so a CV for engineers and an engineering CV follow this format. A professional engineering resume for India adds CGPA and training. For a CV of an engineer, keep it to one or two pages.

How should a network, DevOps or computer engineer resume differ from a general engineering resume?

A network engineer resume names protocols, vendors and uptime; a devops engineer resume names pipelines, cloud platforms and deploy frequency; a computer engineer resume shows hardware and embedded projects. Keep one line of tools per role and put a number on each project.

What goes on an industrial or process engineer resume?

An industrial engineer resume leads with efficiency results, such as cycle time cut or throughput raised, and methods like Lean or Six Sigma. A process engineer resume shows internship or capstone results on a line, such as scrap cut or cycle time. For both, name the software, the plant size and the result of each project, and list the degree and any license.
