Software Engineer & Developer Resume Examples
A software engineer analyzes users' needs, then designs, builds, tests and maintains software to meet them. A software engineer resume should prove skills such as Java / Python / JavaScript, spring Boot and react or Angular with numbers from your own work. What does a software engineer do?
The day-to-day work is writing and reviewing code, fixing bugs, designing the pieces of an application so they work together, and documenting defects and releases. In the US, software developers work mostly in computer systems design, finance and insurance, software publishers and manufacturing. A software engineer resume should show the stack you used and the scale you worked at.
Software Engineer duties to put on a resume
- Analyze users' needs and software requirements, then design and develop software to meet them.
- Design each piece of an application or system and plan how the pieces will work together.
- Write, test and debug code, and modify existing software to correct errors or improve performance.
- Keep programs working through software maintenance and updates.
- Create test plans, scenarios and procedures for new software.
- Document and report defects or problems with software.
- Prepare reports on project specifications, activities or status.
Software Engineer resume format and template
- Link your GitHub with two or three pinned repositories that have a readable README.
- Write the tech stack on each role line (Java, Spring Boot, Kafka) so applicant tracking systems and recruiters see it at once.
- Give scale in numbers: requests a day, users, services owned, test coverage.
- Pick a resume template software engineer recruiters can scan in seconds: one column, plain headings, no skill bars or icons.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

- Reviewed about 15 pull requests a week and mentored 3 junior engineers through their first production releases.
- Fixed 30+ production bugs in the first six months, bringing the open defect count from 64 to 21.
- Set up a Jenkins pipeline that ran 600 tests on every commit and cut manual deployment time by 3 hours.
- Migrated 3 services to AWS ECS, lowering monthly infrastructure cost by 22%.
Key skills to list
Hard skills: Java / Python / JavaScript, Spring Boot, React or Angular, REST APIs and microservices, SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL), MongoDB / Redis, Git and GitHub, Docker and Kubernetes, AWS or Azure, CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), Data structures and algorithms, JUnit / Postman testing.

Education and certifications
- Software developers typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field (BLS). Name the school, degree and year.
- BLS lists no license or certification requirement for software developers. Add a cloud certificate such as AWS only if you hold it, with the year; real projects count for more.
- Customers and employers value analytical, communication, detail-oriented and problem-solving skills (BLS); show them through results in your bullets.

FAQ
Software Engineer resume questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
How do I write an entry level software engineer resume?
Lead with education, any internship and two or three projects with a live link or GitHub. Add your languages, a cloud certificate if you hold one and one or two numbers per project, such as users, endpoints or test coverage. Employers hiring new graduates look for projects first.
Which programming skills should I list?
List the languages and frameworks named in the job posting that you can actually code in, such as Java with Spring Boot or Python with Django, along with SQL, Git and one cloud platform. Group them under headings so a recruiter finds the stack in a few seconds.
What does a software engineer do, for a resume job description?
BLS describes the work as analyzing users' needs, designing and developing software to meet them, planning how the pieces of a system fit together, maintaining programs and documenting defects. Turn each duty into a line with a number, such as services owned or releases shipped.
Do software engineers need a degree on the resume?
BLS says software developers typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field. List yours with the school and year. If you are self-taught, lead with projects and work experience, and state any bootcamp or certificate you hold.
Should I put GitHub on my software engineer resume?
Yes, if the pinned repositories are tidy and have a README. A weak profile is worse than none, so clean it up first. Pin two or three projects that match the job's stack and add one line on what each does.
Is a CV different from a resume for software engineers?
In the US the two words mean the same one-page document. In the UK and many other countries, software engineer cv examples and a cv software engineer example look much the same: stack, projects, results and education, kept to one or two pages. A software engineer cv template in one column works for both.
How is a senior software engineer resume different?
It shows ownership: system design, scale handled, migrations led, engineers mentored and the business result, not only the technologies used. Open each role with the biggest outcome, such as a release cycle cut from two weeks to four days.
How should a software engineering resume be organized?
A software engineering resume leads with a one-line summary and a skills block of languages and tools, then experience with what you built and its measurable effect: latency cut, users served, deploy time. Add one or two projects for early careers. Keep it to one page under about seven years.
