Programmer Resume & CV Examples

A programmer writes, tests and fixes the code that turns a design or specification into a working program. A programmer resume should prove skills such as Java, C# or C++, Python, and SQL and a relational database with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a programmer do?

O*NET's computer programmer profile lists writing, analyzing and rewriting programs, correcting errors and rechecking the results, revising or expanding existing programs to run faster or meet new requirements, running trial runs, and documenting changes with comments so others can follow the code. Reported titles include programmer analyst, application programmer analyst and web programmer. In the US, programmers work for software firms, banks, insurers, government agencies and IT consultancies, often on business applications in Java, C#, Python, SQL or older languages such as COBOL. A strong programmer resume shows languages with years of use, programs you built or fixed, and measurable results such as faster jobs or fewer defects.

Programmer duties to put on a resume

  • Write, analyze, review and rewrite programs from a specification or workflow chart.
  • Correct errors and recheck programs until they produce the right results.
  • Revise, repair or expand existing programs to run faster or meet new requirements.
  • Run trial runs of programs and applications to check the output.
  • Consult with managers, engineers and analysts to clarify what a program should do.
  • Document program changes and comment code so others can understand it.

Programmer resume format and template

  • List languages with years of use or project size, not a flat list of 20 names.
  • Link one project or repository with its size and tests.
  • Keep it to one page below about 8 years of experience.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Programmer resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

Is there a programmer resume template I can use?

Yes. A one-column programmer resume template with summary, experience, projects, skills and education works for most applicants, and it reads well in applicant tracking systems. Put the language stack in the headline so a recruiter sees it first, then show results in each role.

What is the difference between a programmer and a software developer resume?

A programmer resume stresses writing, testing and fixing code to a specification. A software developer resume adds system design, architecture and owning products end to end. Describe the work at the level you actually did it, and use the title in the job ad when it matches.

Is a CV for a programmer different from a resume?

In length, not in substance. A UK programmer CV often runs to two pages, while US employers expect a one-page resume at most levels. Both should open with your languages and stack, then projects and results, with a GitHub or code link near your name so a hiring engineer can check your work.

How should a resume for computer programmer jobs look?

A resume for computer programmer jobs lists the languages and platforms, then projects with what you built and its effect, such as processes automated or defects cut. Add the version control and test tools. Early career programmers lead with a degree, projects and a repository link, and keep it to one page.
