Nurse & Registered Nurse (RN) Resume Examples
A nurse cares for patients under a care team's direction: taking vital signs, giving medicines and injections, dressing wounds, monitoring changes, keeping records and teaching patients and families about recovery. A nurse resume should prove skills such as vital signs and patient monitoring, IV cannulation and infusion, and medication administration with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a nurse do?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes registered nurses as providing and coordinating patient care and teaching patients and the public about health conditions. Some work in hospital wards, ICUs, operating rooms or emergency departments; others in clinics, schools, community health or home care. In the US, a registered nurse needs an ADN, a BSN or an approved nursing diploma plus a state nursing license, so a resume for a nurse should put the license and BLS card near the top. School nursing or labor and delivery changes the setting and the patient numbers; a new grad leads with clinical rotations and the NCLEX result.
Nurse resume format and template
- Put your RN license (state, status, expiry year) and BLS card in the first third of the page.
- Name the unit, bed count and patient load: "12-bed surgical ICU, 2 patients per shift".
- Keep it to a clean single column; applicant tracking systems read one column cleanly, and license, BLS and unit experience are the lines a nurse manager checks.
- A free nursing resume template for a new grad nurse works best with education and clinical rotations above work history, and the same resume template for a nursing student uses the same layout.
- For a nursing job with experience, the resume format flips that order: license, then units and results, then education, so it reads as a professional resume for a nurse.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists three routes to registered nurse: a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN), an associate's degree (ADN) or a diploma from an approved nursing program. Write the degree, school and year.
- A registered nurse must hold a nursing license from the state where they work, after graduating from an approved program and passing the NCLEX-RN: give the state board, license status and expiry year.
- Add BLS (and ACLS or PALS for ICU, ER or pediatric roles) from the American Heart Association with the year; add an MSN or a specialty certification for advanced and leadership roles.
Applying for nurse jobs in India
- In India, write your State Nursing Council registration, number and validity; Kerala nurses applying elsewhere should say if they hold a transfer.
- Download a nursing fresher resume format as a PDF only after adding the declaration with place and date, which government hospital, ESIC and Indian Railways applications ask for.
- State your notice period and whether you can take night and rotating shifts.
- Use "Staff Nurse | BSc Nursing | ICU | BLS" in your Naukri headline; hospital recruiters search on it.

Is a license necessary on a resume for nurses?
Yes. A US registered nurse must hold a license from the state where they work, so put the state board, license status and expiry year near the top, along with your BLS card. An unlicensed new graduate should write "NCLEX-RN scheduled" with the date.
How do I write a nursing student resume with no experience?
A nursing student resume with no experience as a PDF should be one page, with clinical rotations as the experience: the unit, hours, patient load and skills you practiced under a preceptor. Add your BSN or ADN with the expected date, BLS, and any CNA or volunteer care work. The first sample above is a sample resume for nurses without paid experience.
What is a good resume objective for a nursing student or new RN?
One or two lines naming the role, your degree and your strongest clinical exposure, for example: "New graduate RN with a BSN and 720 clinical hours in med-surg and telemetry, seeking a staff nurse role on a med-surg unit." Experienced nurses write a summary with results instead.
How should a new grad nursing resume show a license I do not have yet?
Write the NCLEX date or the license status on the second line, such as NCLEX-RN scheduled for November, and state it as pending, not held. Then put clinical rotations as experience with unit and patient load, and add BLS. Update the line the day your license posts.
Is there a nurse resume template I can use?
Any single-column template works as a nurse resume template. Put your license and state first, then clinical experience in reverse order with patient ratios and units, then education and certifications such as BLS and ACLS. Avoid columns, icons and graphics so a screening program reads it cleanly.
Is a CV for UK nursing jobs different?
Yes. Good CV examples for nursing jobs in the UK run up to two pages, with your NMC registration and PIN near the top, then your band, wards and clinical skills. A CV format for nurses in PDF, with no photo, follows that order, and a free CV template for nurses or a sample CV for nurses is only a guide to it.
