Therapist Resume Examples & Format
A therapist helps clients work through emotional, behavioral and mental health problems through talk therapy, alone or in groups. A therapist resume should prove skills such as individual and group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and DBT or EMDR (if trained) with numbers from your own work. What does a therapist do?
O*NET's mental health counselor profile lists counseling clients individually or in group sessions, encouraging them to talk about what is happening in their lives, guiding them toward coping skills and strategies, assessing suicide risk, performing crisis interventions, and keeping confidential treatment records. Reported titles include mental health therapist, licensed professional counselor (LPC) and licensed mental health counselor (LMHC). In the US, therapists work in group practices, community mental health centers, hospitals, schools, telehealth platforms and private practice. A therapist resume should name your license and state, your client populations and the methods you use, such as CBT or DBT, with caseloads and outcomes. This page covers mental health therapists and counselors; marriage and family therapists use a similar resume, and physical, occupational and massage therapists have their own pages.

Best resume format for a therapist
- Put your license and state in the headline.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

- BLS says counselors in private practice need a master's degree, a set number of supervised clinical hours, a passing exam score and continuing education every year, and NBCC says every state requires one or more of its exams, such as the NCE or NCMHCE. Until you are fully licensed you work under your state's candidate title, such as LPC Candidate (LPCC) in Colorado; name it with your expected license date.

How do I write a resume for therapist jobs as a new graduate?
Lead with your degree and supervised hours, then your practicum and internship sites with session counts, groups you ran and populations you served. Say where you are in licensure and when you expect it. Name the methods you trained in.
What should a mental health therapist resume put first?
Your license and specialty. A headline such as 'LPC, Texas · adults with anxiety and trauma · CBT and EMDR' tells a practice owner in one line whether you fit the caseload they need to fill.
How do I show results on a therapist resume without breaking confidentiality?
Use totals and outcome measures, never details that could identify a client. Caseload size, session counts, the share of clients who improved on the PHQ-9 or GAD-7, wait times cut and programs launched all show results safely.
Is a therapist CV in the UK different from a US resume?
Mostly in name. In the UK the same document is called a CV and usually runs to two pages, and registration bodies differ. A US resume names your state license instead. Caseload, methods and outcomes matter in both.
How do respiratory therapist and massage therapist resumes differ?
A respiratory therapist resume leads with the credential and state license, then clinical settings, ventilator and airway skills and patient load. A sample massage therapist resume leads with license, techniques and sessions a week, rebooking rate and any specialty. Massage therapist resume examples for spas add retail and client retention figures.
