Do you put your address on a resume?
You can, and you do not have to. Employers once wrote to applicants, so a full street address was standard. Now they call or email, and a home address adds a small privacy risk for no gain. The sensible default is your city and state, which tells the reader whether you are local, and the choice depends on the job.
For a job in your own area, put the city and state so the employer sees at a glance that you do not need relocation. Many hiring teams filter or sort applicants by location, and a missing location can look like an incomplete resume. For a remote job, a city and state is still a useful anchor, since some remote roles are open only to certain states. If you are not sure, include the city and state and leave out the street. Some applications, such as certain government forms, ask for a full mailing address in a separate field; give it there and follow the posting, without changing what is on the resume itself.
Resume address format, with examples
Write the address on one line in the contact block under your name, next to your phone and email. Spell the city in full, use the two-letter state abbreviation, and add the ZIP code only if you give a street. Do not label it with the word Address.
| What you share | How it looks | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| City and state | Austin, TX | Almost always: the default |
| City, state and ZIP | Austin, TX 78701 | The employer asks for a ZIP, or the area has many towns of the same name |
| Full address | 412 Maple Street, Apt 3, Austin, TX 78701 | Only when the posting asks for it |
| No address | Phone and email only | You are applying from outside the area and prefer to say so in the cover letter |
Keep the format identical to the contact line of your other documents. The address format for a resume is the same one you use on the cover letter header, covered in the cover letter format guide, so the two documents match.
How to write address on resume in special cases
Relocating. If you are moving to the city where the job is, put the new city and a date: Relocating to Denver, CO in March 2027. Without the date, a reader may assume you cannot start soon. If you have not decided, Open to relocation after your current city works.
Remote work. Give your real city and state, or write Remote beside your time zone if the role has no location rule. Applying from another country. Add the country after the city, and say in the cover letter whether you can work legally in the country of the job. Moving soon or between homes. Use the address where you will be during the hiring period, because replies and interview invitations follow it. A PO box. It is acceptable for privacy, but some online forms reject it, so have a street address ready if one is requested.
Where it goes, and what to leave off
Put it on the contact line at the top, in the same size as your phone and email. Do not put it in the page header or footer, where screening software may skip it. Leave off the country if you are applying within your own, and leave off a second address you no longer use. If you have a website or a profile link to share, add it on the same line; the guide to a resume website explains when that helps. For the rest of the page, see what to include in a resume.
The rest of the top block, including name and links, is covered in the resume header guide.
