What is a headline on a resume?

A resume headline is one line, usually 8 to 15 words, that sits under your name and says what you are and why you are worth reading. It is different from the summary, which runs to two or three sentences. Job portals commonly ask for it as a separate field next to your profile, and recruiters who search a database see it beside your name in the results, so it often decides whether your profile is opened at all. On a document resume it is the first line a reader meets after your name.

A good headline is specific and useful. “Hardworking professional seeking a challenging role” fits anyone and tells a recruiter nothing; “Accounts executive, 4 years in GST filing and reconciliations, Tally Prime” can be matched to a vacancy in seconds.

Resume headline for a fresher

With no job title to put first, a fresher's headline names the degree, the one or two skills that match the job, and a piece of proof, such as an internship, a project or a result. Examples to adapt: “BCA graduate | Python and SQL | built a student attendance system”, “MBA HR fresher | campus recruitment lead | coordinated a 300-student drive”, or “B.Com graduate | Excel and Tally | 3-month accounts internship”. Avoid empty claims like “fresher seeking an opportunity to grow”, which describe every candidate. The fresher resume format shows where the headline sits on the page.

How to write a headline for your resume

Use three parts in this order: your role or degree, your strongest proof (years, a number, or the one tool the ad names), and the target if it helps. Take the words from the job ad, since a recruiter searching a database types those words. Keep it to one line, separate the parts with a vertical bar or comma, and avoid adjectives that cannot be checked. Write a version for each kind of job you apply for; a single headline cannot fit an accounts role and a sales role at once. When the headline is done, check that your resume summary under it adds new information instead of repeating the same line.

Resume headline, resume title and profile headline

The names overlap. In India, a portal field called “resume headline” and a document line called “resume title” mean the same thing: the one-line pitch. A profile headline is the same idea on a networking site, where it sits under your name and can be a little more personal. In US writing you will see it called a title line. A job title, by contrast, is the name of a post you held, so “Senior Accountant” is a job title and “Senior accountant | audit and GST | 9 years” is a headline built around it.

The line sits inside the top block described in the resume header guide.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered.

How long should a resume headline be?

Keep it to one line of about 8 to 15 words, or around 100 characters. It should be short enough to read in a portal result without being cut off. If you need more room, put the extra detail in your summary and keep the headline to the title, the proof and the target.

Do I need a different headline for every job?

You need one for each type of job you apply for, not each vacancy. Change the title and the lead skill to match the ad's words. A recruiter searching a database uses those words, so a headline that mirrors them is found more often than a general one.
