Resume keywords by industry: lists and examples

Resume keywords by industry are the terms that recur in job ads for one field: the methods, tools and credentials a recruiter searches for. Below are eleven industries, each with the keywords to look for and one bullet showing how they read inside a resume. Treat every list as a starting point, because your own job ad has the final say.

How to choose resume keywords for your industry

A keyword is any word or phrase an employer might search for or a reader might look for: a skill, a tool, a certification, a method, a job title. Industries share a vocabulary, which is why the same words recur across ads for one field, and that is what the lists below collect. They do not replace the ad. Use them in three steps: highlight the terms in your target ad, check which of them appear in your industry list so you know you are speaking the field's language, and then write only the ones you can truthfully claim into your summary, skills and bullets. Where a word has an acronym and a long form, such as ITIL or IT service management, use whichever the ad uses and spell the other out once.

The longer method, with placement rules and the ten-row table, is in the resume keywords guide. For how to turn skill names into a skills section, see skills to put on a resume. The bullets below are invented examples that show the shape: a keyword sits inside a sentence with a result, not alone in a list.

When your industry is not listed, the method still works: find five ads, highlight the repeated terms and use the ones that are true for you. Then check the finished file with the ATS resume checker, and see the resume examples by job for full resumes that use these words in context.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered.

How many keywords should a resume have?

There is no fixed count. Include every skill, tool and credential the ad asks for that is true for you, as a rough guide often 10 to 25 across your summary, skills section and bullets, and use each in a sentence that shows what you did with it.

Should I copy keywords from these lists?

No. Use the lists to know what to look for, then take the exact wording from your target job ad. If a keyword is not true for you, leave it off, because it can come up in the interview.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

The ad names the words. The industry only tells you which ones to expect.
