STAR method resume bullets, and the XYZ format

The STAR method resume bullet takes the four parts of a story, Situation, Task, Action and Result, and compresses them into a single line that ends in a result. It is the same idea as the XYZ format that Google recruiters made popular, and both fix the same problem: bullets that list duties and prove nothing. Here is how to write each, with six rewrites.

How to use the STAR method on a resume

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. It began as a way to answer interview questions, but it works well for a resume because it forces you to name what you did and what changed. The catch is length: a resume bullet has one or two lines, so you cannot write a paragraph for each part. The STAR format for a resume squeezes the four parts into one sentence.

  1. Situation and Task (a clause). The problem or goal: when returns were taking 9 days.
  2. Action (the verb and what you did). I rebuilt the intake checklist.
  3. Result (the number). and cut the time to 3 days.

Joined, it reads: Rebuilt the returns intake checklist, cutting processing time from 9 days to 3. The situation and task are implied by the numbers, the action leads, and the result ends the line. If the context is not obvious, keep a few words of it up front: During a seasonal rush, rebuilt.... The same idea sits behind most good bullets, even when nobody names it.

The Google XYZ resume format

The XYZ resume format comes from Laszlo Bock, then head of people operations at Google, who suggested writing each accomplishment as “Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].” X is the result, Y is how you know it, and Z is what you did. It is the formula in the Google XYZ format articles that circulated from his post. The order puts the outcome first, which is why readers like it.

Using it: Increased web sales (X) by 18% (Y) by redesigning the checkout page (Z). The same facts as the STAR line, in a different order. If you are applying to Google or a company with a similar culture, an XYZ format resume signals that you read how they screen. For everyone else it is simply another way to write a bullet with a result up front.

STAR, XYZ and CAR compared

MethodOrderBest whenExample
STARSituation, Task, Action, ResultThe context matters to the readerWhen returns took 9 days, rebuilt the intake checklist and cut it to 3
XYZResult, measure, actionYou have a clear numberCut returns processing time by 67% (9 to 3 days) by rebuilding the intake checklist
CARChallenge, Action, ResultYou need it shorter than STARFixed 9-day returns delay with a new intake checklist; now 3 days
Three bullet formulas. All end in a result a reader can check.

You do not need to choose one for the whole page. Mix them by bullet: use XYZ where you have a clean number, STAR where a sentence of context helps. Vary the openings so the list does not read as a template. The resume action words guide helps with the verbs.

Six resume STAR bullet rewrites

These are invented. The left column is the duty; the right is the same work as a STAR or XYZ bullet.

DutySTAR or XYZ version
Responsible for scheduling staffDuring a hiring freeze, rebuilt the weekly rota for 22 staff and cut overtime by 14%
Handled customer complaintsResolved 30 escalated complaints a week by adding a callback step, lifting satisfaction from 71% to 88%
Ran social mediaGrew a local bakery's account from 800 to 5,200 followers in 8 months by posting three short videos a week
Did monthly reportingAutomated the monthly sales report in a spreadsheet, saving 6 hours a month and removing manual errors
Trained new employeesTrained 14 new hires on the point-of-sale system in a week, so all passed the register check on day three
Managed a projectDelivered a 6-week office move for 40 staff on budget by sequencing departments across three weekends
Six duties rewritten as STAR or XYZ bullets. Numbers are invented; use yours.

When you cannot find a number, estimate honestly or use a count: how many people, how often, how long. A result such as “no missed deadlines in 12 months” is still a result. The guide to resume accomplishments shows where to look.

Where STAR belongs on the page, and where it does not

Use it in the bullets under your jobs, and for projects and volunteer roles. Two or three bullets per job in STAR or XYZ form, mixed with shorter ones, make a strong resume. Do not write every bullet as a mini story, because a full STAR story belongs in an interview or a cover letter, where you have room. A cover letter can expand the best one into three sentences; see how to write a cover letter.

Put the strongest bullet first under each job. If you are a student or new graduate, use the same method on class projects, as in the resume with no experience guide.

Mistakes with STAR and XYZ bullets

  • Writing the whole story. If the bullet runs past two lines, cut the situation to a clause.
  • Starting every bullet the same way. Mix the order so the list reads like a person wrote it.
  • Making up a number. Use a real one, rounded, or a count. A recruiter may ask how you measured it.
  • Claiming a team result as personal. Say what you did, and name the team size if it was shared.
  • Burying the result. It should be the last thing in a STAR bullet and the first in an XYZ one.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is the STAR method for resumes or interviews?

Both. It started as an interview technique, but on a resume you compress it into one line that ends with a result. A fuller version of the same story can then answer the interview question.

What is the Google XYZ resume formula?

Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]. It was described by Laszlo Bock, then Google's head of people operations. The result comes first, then how you measured it, then what you did.

Can I use STAR for every bullet?

No. Use it for your strongest two or three bullets per job and keep the rest short. A page of mini stories is hard to skim.
