Work experience in a resume: what the section holds
This section is the record of your paid jobs, internships and on-the-job training, newest first. Each entry has the same parts: your job title, the employer and its city, the months and years you worked there, and two to five bullets. A good resume work experience section answers a single question for the reader: what did this person get done that I need?
If you are a fresh graduate, your OJT or internship goes here, labelled as such. If you have no job yet, see the sample for a fresh graduate without work experience below, and the fresh graduate resume format for the layout. A full page of paid experience is not required to be hired. Honest, specific lines are.
How to write work experience in a resume: duties versus results
Many resumes in the Philippines list duties and responsibilities, such as handle customer calls or prepare reports. A duty says what the job asked; a result says what you did with it. Employers read duty lists all day, so lead each bullet with an action verb and finish with a number.
| Duty (weak) | Result (strong) |
|---|---|
| Responsible for handling customer calls | Handled 60 calls a shift in a health-insurance queue, with a 94% satisfaction score |
| Prepared reports | Prepared the weekly sales report for 12 branches and delivered it every Monday by 9 am |
| Assisted the teacher | Supported a Grade 4 class of 38 pupils, marking daily seatwork and tracking attendance |
| In charge of inventory | Counted and recorded 1,200 items each month and cut stock differences from 6% to 2% |
| Cashier duties | Processed about 180 transactions a day with no cash shortage across 5 months |
You can still use the words duties and responsibilities as a short lead line when a form asks for them, then follow with your bullets. For the verbs, see resume action words; for finding the number, the guide to resume accomplishments.

How many years of experience should be on a resume?
Show the last 10 to 15 years, and go back further only if an older job is strongly relevant. Give the most space to the last two or three jobs. An early job that does not relate to the work you want can be shortened to one line, or left off. The reader wants recent proof, and a long history of short, unrelated jobs hides it.
If you have under a year of experience, include every job, internship and project. If you have been in one field for a long time, combine the early years into one line: Earlier roles in accounting, 2012 to 2018. Keep the resume to one or two pages.
Dates, order and the resume date format
List jobs in reverse order, the newest first. For each, write the month and year for start and end (June 2025 to March 2026), or the year only when you worked more than five years in the same place. Use one date format throughout the resume: do not mix 06/2025 with June 2025. For your current job write to now or Present. A gap of several months needs no explanation on the page; if it is long, a single line in the summary or the cover letter is enough.
When two jobs overlap, list them by start date and make the overlap clear. Put the job title first and the company second, so that a reader scanning down the left side sees your roles.
Work experience for freshers in India and the US
The same section is built the same way abroad, with small differences. A resume in India often adds the reporting line or team size and a short project note under each job, and freshers place internships here. A resume in the US puts a stronger weight on numbers and skips duties altogether. If you plan to apply in either market, the guides to the fresher resume format for India and to what to include in a resume show the rest of the page.
