Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the post of Staff Nurse at Lourdes Hospital, Kochi, advertised on your website. I completed my B.Sc. Nursing at a Kerala University of Health Sciences college this year with 78%, and I am registered with the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council.

During my twelve-month internship at a 300-bed private hospital I rotated through medicine, surgery, paediatrics, maternity and a ten-bed ICU. Under supervision I cared for six to eight patients a shift, gave injections and IV medicines, monitored vitals and wrote nursing notes. In the ICU I learnt to read a ventilator alarm before reaching for it, and to hand over every patient in the same order so nothing is missed.

I hold a BLS certificate and follow infection control practice strictly. I speak Malayalam, English, Hindi and some Tamil, which helps with patients from outside Kerala.

I can join immediately and I am available for rotating and night shifts. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Emily Hartwell

Marcus Delaney

Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to apply for the post of Senior Staff Nurse (Critical Care) at Kalinga Hospital. I have four years of experience in a 12-bed surgical ICU at a 500-bed multispecialty hospital in Bhubaneswar, caring for ventilated and post-operative patients.

I care for two to three ICU patients a shift, managing ventilators, infusion pumps, central lines and drains. Our unit has had no central line infection for 18 months, and I have been part of the bundle checks that made that possible, from dressing changes to daily line reviews. I also orient new nurses on ICU charting and handover; six have completed orientation with me so far.

I trained in NABH documentation and have been through two NABH assessments, and I hold BLS and ACLS certificates.

Your hospital is expanding its cardiac surgery unit, and post-operative ICU care is my daily work. My notice period is one month, and my council registration is available on request.

Sincerely,
Marcus Delaney

Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching nurse resume and the skills nurse job adverts ask for. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter

Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:

  • I have cared for ventilated and post-operative patients in a 12-bed surgical ICU for four years, with no central line infection in 18 months; I am applying for your Senior Staff Nurse (Critical Care) post.
  • As a newly registered B.Sc. Nursing graduate who rotated through five wards and an ICU during my internship, I would like to apply for the post of Staff Nurse at your hospital.

What to write in the body

One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a nurse, the body should also:

  • Show patient load and one quality result (infection rates, falls, audits).
  • Name certifications (BLS, ACLS) and NABH or JCI experience.

How to close the letter

Close by confirming your registration, shift availability (including nights), joining date and that references are available. For Gulf, UK or other overseas posts, add your licensing exam status (Prometric, DHA, NMC CBT, OSCE).

Writing it with no experience

  • Lead with your B.Sc. Nursing or GNM, internship rotations and patient load.
  • List BLS, infection control training and your registration.
  • Show compassion with one short example from your internship.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out nursing council registration.
  • Claiming independent procedures done under supervision.
  • Including patient-identifying details.

Add your licensing exam status (Prometric, DHA, HAAD, NMC CBT and OSCE), IELTS or OET score, and total years in each unit.
