Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Software Engineer I role at Kovai Cloud, which I saw on your careers page. I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering at an Anna University affiliated college this year with a CGPA of 8.3, and I spent four months as a software engineering intern.

At Cobalt Labs I built REST APIs in Java and Spring Boot for an inventory module, wrote their tests and fixed the bugs QA found. One endpoint returned every item on every call, so I added paging and filters, and the screen that used it went from sluggish to instant. I also built two full-stack projects with React and Spring Boot and deployed both on AWS with a small CI pipeline.

I have solved more than 450 data structures and algorithms problems and I enjoy the part of engineering that is careful thinking before typing. I write small commits and clear pull request descriptions.

I can join immediately. My GitHub and both live projects are linked below.

Sincerely,
Jordan Jacobsen

Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to apply for the Senior Software Engineer role on your payments platform. I have four years as a backend engineer in fintech, and at Northwind Tech Services in Noida I own four Spring Boot microservices that handle about 1.5 million requests a day.

When p95 latency on our main service crept up to 820 ms, I traced it to two slow queries and a chatty call to another service; tuning the queries, adding a read cache and batching the calls brought it to 530 ms. I also led the move of three services from virtual machines to AWS ECS with blue-green deploys, which removed our weekend release window.

I review code for three engineers and try to leave comments that explain the why, not only the fix. I write design notes before large changes so the team can argue with the plan, not the code.

Your advert mentions reliability at scale, which is the work I want to keep doing. My notice period is 60 days.

Sincerely,
Hannah Park

Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching software engineer resume. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter

Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:

  • I own four fintech microservices at 1.5 million requests a day and cut p95 latency from 820 ms to 530 ms; I am applying for your Senior Software Engineer role.
  • As a computer science graduate who built REST APIs during a four-month internship and deployed two full-stack projects on AWS, I would like to apply for your Software Engineer I role.

What to write in the body

One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a software engineer, the body should also:

  • Tell one engineering story: the problem, how you found the cause, the result.
  • Show how you work: code review, design notes, testing, deployment.

How to close the letter

Close with links to GitHub or a design write-up, the part of their system you would like to work on, and your notice period. Offer to walk through a design or incident in the technical round.

Writing it with no experience

  • Use an internship and two deployed projects with a real detail you solved.
  • Give your DSA practice count and contests.
  • Link clean code with READMEs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A list of 15 technologies with no project.
  • No numbers for scale or impact.
  • Using the same letter for frontend, backend and data roles.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What is the best format for a software engineer cover letter?

One page: a header, three short paragraphs (role and strongest fact, one engineering story, how you work) and a close with links and notice period.

How do I write a software engineer cover letter as a fresher?

Use an internship and deployed projects with one real problem you solved, your DSA practice, and your GitHub link.

What should a senior software engineer highlight?

Scale, performance or reliability improvements, design leadership, code review and mentoring.

Can I use a LaTeX or Overleaf template?

Yes, if the output is a clean one-page PDF. Content matters more than the template.
