Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Junior Data Analyst position at Charminar Foods, which I saw on LinkedIn. I completed my B.Sc. in Statistics at Osmania University this year with a CGPA of 8.4, and spent four months as a data analyst intern at a retail analytics company.
At Bluefin Retail Solutions I wrote 25 SQL queries on a sales table of two million rows and built a Power BI dashboard that eight store managers now open every morning. The part I am proudest of is less visible: 14 weekly Excel files arrived in slightly different formats, and I rebuilt their cleaning in Power Query so the team no longer spends three hours a week fixing columns by hand.
On my own I analysed 7,000 telecom customer records in Python with pandas and scikit-learn to find the factors behind churn, and wrote up the result in plain language for a non-technical reader. I think the job of an analyst is to answer the question the manager actually has, not the one that is easiest to query.
I can join immediately and would be glad to walk you through my dashboard and code.
Sincerely,
Isaiah Whitfield

Dear Hiring Manager,
I would like to apply for the Senior Data Analyst role on your supply chain analytics team. For four years I have worked in e-commerce and logistics analytics, and I currently own the weekly sales and delivery dashboards at Sunrise Commerce in Bengaluru.
Thirty managers read my nine Power BI dashboards every Monday, and I write SQL daily on a 40 million row orders table in BigQuery. Last year I noticed late deliveries clustering in a set of pincodes on the same weekdays. I traced it to one carrier's hub schedule, the operations team moved those pincodes to another carrier, and late deliveries fell by 18%.
Before that, as a junior analyst at Orbit Logistics in Pune, I automated five weekly Excel reports with Python and Power Query, which saved the team about ten hours a week, and I validated data feeds from four warehouses.
Your advert talks about delivery promise accuracy, which is the problem I have spent the last two years on. My notice period is 60 days, and my portfolio of anonymised dashboards is linked below.
Sincerely,
Tomas Ibarra
Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching data analyst resume and the skills data analyst job adverts ask for. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter
Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:
- My pincode-level delivery analysis led to a carrier change that cut late deliveries by 18%, and I am applying for your Senior Data Analyst role.
- As a statistics graduate who built a Power BI dashboard used daily by eight store managers during my internship, I would like to apply for your Junior Data Analyst position.
What to write in the body
One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a data analyst, the body should also:
- Tell one insight story: what you noticed, what the business did, and the number that changed.
- Show who uses your work: how many managers read your dashboards and how often.
How to close the letter
Close by linking to a portfolio (GitHub, Tableau Public, or anonymised screenshots), connecting your domain to theirs, and giving your notice period or joining date. Hiring managers for analyst roles often decide on the portfolio link.
Writing it with no experience
- Lead with a degree that shows numbers (statistics, maths, engineering, commerce) and one or two self-driven projects on public data.
- Describe each project as a business question, the data size, the tools and the answer.
- Link to your GitHub or a public dashboard and offer to take a SQL or Excel test.
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing ten tools and no result; one insight with a number beats a long stack.
- Using only course projects copied from tutorials without saying what you found.
- Forgetting the portfolio link.
How do I write a data analyst cover letter as a fresher?
Give your degree, an internship or two projects with data size, tools and findings, link to your portfolio, and offer a SQL or Excel test.
What should an experienced data analyst write?
Your stack and data scale, the dashboards or reports you own and who uses them, one insight that changed a business number, and your domain.
Should I attach a portfolio with a data analyst cover letter?
Yes, as a link. GitHub, Tableau Public or a short PDF of anonymised dashboards works well.
Is a data analytics cover letter different from a data analyst one?
No. Use the title from the advert; the content is the same.
