Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Junior Financial Analyst (FP&A) role at Kaveri Consumer Products, which I saw on LinkedIn. I completed my MBA in Finance at Christ University, Bengaluru, this year with a CGPA of 8.0, and I have cleared CFA Level 1.

During my summer internship in the FP&A team at Veda Auto Components, I built the monthly budget-versus-actual report covering 14 cost centres. While building it I noticed freight costs running well above budget in two plants; the gap came to ₹26 lakh and led to a renegotiation with the transporter. I also rebuilt the report's data pull in Power Query, which cut its preparation from three days to one.

As a personal project I built a three-statement and DCF model of a listed FMCG company; my estimate of value came within 6% of the market price, which mattered less to me than understanding which assumptions moved it most. I work daily in Excel and Power BI.

I can join immediately and would be glad to walk you through my model.

Yours sincerely,
Emily Ibarra

Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to apply for the Senior Financial Analyst role in your group FP&A team. For four years I have worked in FP&A and advisory, and I currently own the budget and rolling forecast for two business units at Bharat Home Products in Mumbai.

The two units have an annual budget of ₹420 crore. When I took over, our quarterly forecasts were landing at about 88% accuracy; by moving from top-down targets to a driver-based model built on volumes, price and mix from sales, accuracy is now 96%. I built a Power BI margin dashboard that 25 managers use, and my trade-spend analysis identified ₹4.5 crore of savings in promotions that were not lifting volume.

Before that I was an assistant analyst at Konkan Capital Advisors, preparing monthly MIS for 11 clients and valuation models for six SME transactions.

Your group is consolidating planning across categories, which is the work I most want to do next. My notice period is 60 days.

Yours sincerely,
Marcus Lombardi

Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching financial analyst CV. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter

Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:

  • I own a ₹420 crore budget and raised forecast accuracy from 88% to 96% with a driver-based model; I am applying for your Senior Financial Analyst role.
  • As an MBA (Finance) graduate and CFA Level 1 whose internship variance report found a ₹26 lakh freight overspend, I would like to apply for your Junior Financial Analyst role.

What to write in the body

One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a financial analyst, the body should also:

  • Show one insight with value: savings found, accuracy improved, a decision changed.
  • Name the tools and methods: Excel modelling, DCF, variance analysis, Power BI, SAP or Hyperion.

How to close the letter

Close by linking your experience to their planning cycle or business, offer to walk through a model or report (with confidential data removed), and give your notice period.

Writing it with no experience

  • Lead with your MBA, B.Com or CA/CFA level, and an internship with one real finding.
  • Build and describe a model of a listed company: three statements, DCF, key assumptions.
  • Show Excel and BI skills with a concrete report you built.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Only listing tools, with no insight or value found.
  • Confusing investment banking, equity research and corporate FP&A roles in one letter.
  • Sharing a current employer's confidential numbers.
