Education and certifications
- Financial analysts typically need a bachelor's degree, preferably in finance or a related business field. Some employers favor a master's degree, and internships strengthen a candidacy (BLS).
- Securities licenses are overseen by FINRA. Because most require employer sponsorship, companies do not expect you to hold them before you start (BLS). List a license only if you hold it.
- Professional certification may enhance your standing but is optional (BLS). Put it under education with the year.

Where can I see a financial analyst resume sample?
The three examples above are a sample financial analyst resume for each stage: a graduate, a four-year analyst and a senior analyst. Each financial analyst resume example shows the summary, experience lines with numbers, education and skills. Copy the layout and swap in your own figures.
How do I write an entry level financial analyst resume?
Lead with your degree, internships and a model or report you built, each with one number. Add Excel, Power BI or SQL skills and any student investment fund or case competition. Employers know entry level candidates have limited experience, so show proof of skill.
Do financial analysts need licenses or certifications?
BLS says securities licenses are overseen by FINRA, and because most need employer sponsorship, companies do not expect them before you start. Certification is optional. List a license or certification only if you hold it, with the year.
Is a CV for a financial analyst different from a resume?
Not in substance. A CV for a financial analyst in the UK covers the same ground as a US resume: models built, forecasts and variance work, the size of the budgets you analyzed, Excel and BI tools, and any CFA progress. Match the word the job posting uses, since recruiters search for both.
Which tools should a financial analyst list?
Excel comes first, then Power BI or Tableau for reporting, SQL for data, and any ERP such as SAP or Oracle you have used. Name the tool beside the result, such as "automated 3 reports in Power BI, saving 12 hours a month".
How do I write a resume for a senior financial analyst?
A resume for senior financial analyst roles leads with the scope you cover: budget size, forecasts you own and decisions your analysis changed. Add modeling tools, cross-team work and mentoring, and results such as variance cut or savings found. Include CFA or CPA status where relevant.
