What does an auditor do?

O*NET lists auditors with accountants; their tasks include examining financial statements and records for accuracy and conformance to standards, inspecting accounting systems for efficiency and accepted procedures, reviewing accounts for discrepancies and preparing detailed reports on audit findings. In the US, external auditors work at public accounting firms and internal auditors work inside companies, banks and government agencies, so an auditor resume should name the audit type, the clients or business units covered and what your findings changed.

Auditor duties to put on a resume

  • Examine financial statements and accounting records for accuracy and conformance to standards.
  • Inspect accounting systems and controls for efficiency and accepted procedures.
  • Review accounts for discrepancies and follow up on differences.
  • Test samples of transactions and document the work in audit files.
  • Prepare detailed reports on audit findings and recommendations.
  • Discuss findings with managers and track that fixes are made.

Best resume format for an auditor

  • Name the audit type in your headline: external, internal, IT or SOX.
  • Describe clients by industry and size rather than by name.
  • One page up to about five years; two pages for seniors and managers.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Auditor resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How do I write an entry-level auditor resume?

Lead with your accounting degree, credit hours and any CPA exam progress, then an audit internship or accounting job with counts of items tested or schedules prepared. Add Excel and any audit software. Keep it to one page.

What is the difference between an internal and an external auditor resume?

An external auditor resume shows client engagements, financial statement testing and workpaper review at a public accounting firm. An internal auditor resume shows control testing, operational audits and savings inside one company. Lead with the type that matches the job.

Do I need a CPA to work as an auditor?

Not for every role. Many entry-level audit and internal audit jobs hire before the CPA, and some internal audit roles prefer the CIA. Signing audit reports at a public firm needs a CPA license set by your state board. Check the job posting.
