What the official job profile lists for a data analyst
O*NET, the US Labor Department's job database, has no occupation titled data analyst. The closest profile for reporting and dashboard work is business intelligence analysts, whose sample titles include business analyst and BI analyst. Its tasks fit the analyst job well: produce standard or custom reports that summarise business data for leaders, keep dashboards and BI tools up to date, manage the flow of that information to users, support existing reports, and spot trends that affect business strategy. Its top work activities are analysing data, working with computers, processing information and interpreting what information means for others. The hot technologies listed include Power BI, Excel, Tableau, Snowflake, Apache Spark, SAS, Salesforce and Google Analytics.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no separate handbook page for data analysts either; its data scientists page covers the nearest work. It lists collecting, categorising and analysing data, using visualisation software to present findings and making business recommendations from the analysis. Its important qualities are analytical, computer, communication, logical-thinking, math and problem-solving skills, with a bachelor's degree in maths, statistics, computer science or a related field as the typical entry point.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Data skills for a data analyst resume
- SQL (joins, CTEs, window functions): Pulling and joining data yourself rather than waiting for an export. Interviews often include a live query, so name the database, the table size and how often the queries ran. Example: Wrote SQL daily on a 40 million row orders table in BigQuery for 9 dashboards.
- Data cleaning and validation: BLS lists collecting, categorising and analysing data as a core duty, and cleaning comes before any of it. Show hours saved or errors caught, since a manager values a dataset they can trust. Example: Rebuilt cleaning for 14 weekly Excel files in Power Query, saving 3 hours a week.
- BigQuery / MySQL / PostgreSQL: Name the actual databases you queried, because an advert usually says which one the team runs. Give row counts, as querying a small extract and a large production table are different jobs. Example: Queried a 2 million row sales table in MySQL for 25 recurring reports.
- A/B testing and statistics: BLS names math and logical-thinking skills, including statistical methods, as important for the nearest occupation. Catching a flawed test is often stronger evidence than listing tests that went well. Example: Analysed 4 checkout A/B tests and flagged 1 false win caused by a 2-day data gap.
Visualisation and reporting skills for a data analyst resume
- Power BI and DAX: Power BI heads O*NET's hot technology list for business intelligence analysts, who keep dashboards and reports current. Say how many dashboards you own and who opens them. Example: Own 9 Power BI dashboards read by 30 managers every Monday.
- Tableau: Tableau is also on O*NET's hot technology list for this work. Without job use yet, public dashboards with view counts let a recruiter open your work and judge it directly. Example: Published 3 Tableau Public dashboards on Indian retail data, viewed by 1,200+ people.
- Advanced Excel (pivot tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP): Excel stays on O*NET's hot technology list for BI analysts. Pivot tables and lookups are expected; automating a recurring report is the result that sets you apart. Example: Automated 5 weekly Excel reports, saving 10 hours a week.
- KPI and MIS reporting: O*NET's first task for BI analysts is producing standard or custom reports that summarise business data for leaders. Show that the measures you defined were agreed and used, not only built. Example: Defined 12 delivery KPIs agreed by operations and finance for monthly reviews.
- Google Sheets and Looker Studio: Smaller teams often report straight from Sheets and Looker Studio. Say who opens the report and how often it refreshes, since a daily automated report saves someone a manual job. Example: Built a Looker Studio report for 8 store managers updated every morning.
Programming skills for a data analyst resume
- Python (pandas, NumPy, matplotlib): BLS lists computer skills, including writing code to analyse data, among the important qualities, and Python is on O*NET's hot technology list for data scientists. Give the dataset, the library and what you found. Example: Analysed 7,000 telecom records in pandas and found 3 factors behind most churn.
- Google Analytics: Google Analytics appears on O*NET's hot technology list for BI analysts. Product and marketing teams want funnel findings, so name the step that lost users and by how much. Example: Tracked a 12-step purchase funnel in GA4 and found 1 step losing 30% of users.
Business skills for a data analyst resume
- Root-cause analysis: O*NET lists identifying trends with business strategy implications. A strong bullet runs from a symptom to a cause to a number that changed after someone acted on it. Example: Traced late deliveries to 1 carrier's hub schedule, leading to 18% fewer late orders.
- Explaining numbers in plain language: O*NET ranks interpreting the meaning of information for others among the top work activities, and BLS stresses explaining results to non-technical audiences. Short summaries that managers read each week are good proof. Example: Wrote 1-page summaries for 30 managers each week alongside the dashboards.
Which data analyst skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with SQL, Excel and one BI tool, each shown in a project on a public dataset with a clear question and a finding. Add Python if you used it to clean or analyse data, not just to finish a course. Hiring managers for junior roles check whether you can write a query, build one honest chart and explain it in two sentences, so link to work they can open.
Experienced: Lead with the reports and dashboards you own, who reads them and a decision your finding changed. Then show depth: the warehouse you query, testing and statistics, automation that saved hours. Senior analysts also set the definitions for key measures and get finance and operations to agree on them, which matches O*NET's task of managing the flow of business intelligence to users.
Certifications for a data analyst resume
- Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) or Tableau Desktop Specialist.
- Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate.
- SQL certification (e.g. HackerRank, Oracle), for freshers.
What to leave off a data analyst resume
- Every library from a course syllabus. Twenty Python packages invite a question on each one; keep the ones you used on real data.
- Dashboards with no reader. "Built 15 dashboards" means little unless someone used them, so say who and how often.
- Skill bars or percentage ratings for tools. They cannot be checked, and an analyst should be the last person to quote an unmeasured number.
- Machine learning claims when the job is reporting. A model trained once in a course belongs under projects, not core skills.

What skills should a data analyst put on a resume?
Start with SQL, then one BI tool (Power BI or Tableau), Excel and Python if the advert asks. Add data cleaning, statistics and testing, KPI reporting and the ability to explain a result plainly. O*NET's hot technologies for business intelligence analysts include Power BI, Excel, Tableau and Google Analytics, so name the ones you have used and the size of the data.
What skills can a fresher data analyst show with no experience?
SQL, Excel and one BI tool, each shown in a project built on public data, plus basic Python. For each project, write the question, the data size and the finding in one line. A link to a dashboard or notebook lets a recruiter check the work rather than trust a keyword.
Is Python required for data analyst jobs?
Not always. Many adverts list it, but SQL and a BI tool usually come first for reporting roles. BLS lists computer skills such as writing code to analyse data among the important qualities for the nearest occupation, so Python with pandas is a strong extra, especially once datasets outgrow a spreadsheet.
How do I write data analyst skills on a resume?
Group them under data, visualisation, programming and business, so a reader can scan the list in seconds. Then prove the top three in your experience bullets with the data size, the tool and the result. Match the advert's wording, such as "Power BI" rather than "BI tools".
Do you need a degree to become a data analyst?
Most employers ask for one. O*NET reports that most business intelligence analysts need a bachelor's degree, and BLS says data scientists typically need a bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field. Without one, lead with projects that prove the same skills on real data.
