What the official job profile lists for a business analyst

The US Labor Department's O*NET database files business analysts under management analysts (13-1111.00). Its core tasks read like a business analyst's week: gathering and organising information on problems or procedures, interviewing staff and observing work on site, analysing what was found, and documenting findings with recommendations for new systems or procedures. It also lists checking with staff that newly implemented systems work, reviewing forms and reports with managers and users, and preparing manuals and training people on new procedures.

O*NET ranks active listening, critical thinking, reading comprehension, speaking and writing as the top skills, and flags Microsoft Excel, Visio, PowerPoint and SharePoint, Power BI, Tableau, Atlassian Jira and Salesforce as in-demand technology. India's National Qualification Register also carries a Business Analyst course at NSQF Level 5 in the IT-ITeS sector, but it is built around data work: Excel, R, Python, visualisation, statistics and a capstone project. If an Indian advert leans that way, move your data tools higher on the list.

The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.

Requirements skills for a business analyst resume

  • BRD, FRD and SRS writing: Turning what the business wants into a document a developer can build from. O*NET lists documenting findings and recommending new systems or procedures among the core tasks. Name the document type and what it led to. Example: Wrote a BRD and 28 user stories for a loan approval tool during a 3-month internship.
  • User stories and acceptance criteria: In Agile teams, requirements live as stories with clear pass or fail conditions. A reader wants proof your stories cut rework or developer questions, so give a before and after figure if you tracked one. Example: Added acceptance criteria to every story, cutting requirement-related rework by 30%.
  • Requirement workshops: Drawing needs out of people who each describe them differently. O*NET lists interviewing staff and observing work on site among the core tasks. Say who attended, how many sessions you ran and what got decided. Example: Ran 20+ workshops with product owners and operations teams across 11 releases.
  • Gap and impact analysis: Comparing how a process runs today with how it should run, and listing what a change will touch. O*NET's task list opens with gathering and organising information on problems or procedures. Show one gap you found and what fixing it saved. Example: Found 3 removable steps in a 14-step approval process through a gap analysis.

Process and testing skills for a business analyst resume

  • Process mapping (BPMN, Visio, Lucidchart): Drawing a process step by step so everyone argues about the same picture. Microsoft Visio is one of the tools O*NET flags as in demand for this occupation. Name the notation or tool and the steps you removed. Example: Mapped an 11-step claims process and proposed a 7-step version.
  • UAT planning and test cases: User acceptance testing checks that the built system does what the business asked for. O*NET lists working with staff to make sure new systems function. Give the releases you covered and the defects found before or after go-live. Example: Owned UAT for 11 releases of an app with 2 lakh users, with 0 severity-1 defects after go-live.
  • Agile and Scrum: Working in short sprints alongside a product owner and developers. Name the ceremonies you ran, such as backlog grooming or sprint review, and the team size; the word Agile alone tells a reader very little. Example: Ran backlog grooming for a 9-person Scrum team every sprint for 2 years.
  • Wireframing (Figma, Balsamiq): Sketching screens so users can react before anything is coded. Name the tool and how many review rounds the design needed, since fewer rounds suggests you understood the need early. Example: Drew 15 wireframes for a card-dispute flow, approved in 2 review rounds.

Technical skills for a business analyst resume

  • SQL: Pulling and checking data yourself instead of waiting for a developer. Say what you used it for: validating test data, sizing a problem or checking a report. Be ready to write a simple query in the interview. Example: Wrote SQL checks on 3 tables to validate test data for a card-dispute tool.
  • Jira and Confluence: Atlassian Jira appears in O*NET's list of in-demand technology for this occupation. Show how you used the pair: stories written, pages linked to tickets, or a traceability set-up other teams relied on. Example: Maintained a Confluence space of 60 requirement pages linked to 400 Jira stories.
  • Power BI or Tableau: Both sit on O*NET's in-demand technology list for this occupation. A dashboard someone used to make a decision is better proof than a course certificate, so say what data it covered and who read it. Example: Built a Power BI dashboard on 50,000 rows of sales data, placed 2nd of 40 teams.
  • Advanced Excel: Excel is on O*NET's in-demand list too. Traceability matrices, data checks and quick what-if models are the usual analyst uses; name the one you built and the people who depended on it. Example: Tracked 120 open requirements in an Excel traceability matrix with weekly status for 3 teams.

Soft skills for a business analyst resume

  • Managing conflicting stakeholder views: Different teams want different things from the same release. O*NET ranks active listening and speaking among the top skills for the job. Describe a real conflict, how you settled it and what it protected. Example: Settled a scope conflict between 2 product owners, keeping a release on its date.
  • Writing for business and developers: Writing is one of the top skills O*NET lists for this occupation. The real test is whether people act on your documents without coming back with questions, so give a measure of that. Example: Cut clarification questions from developers by 40% after rewriting story templates.

Which business analyst skills to lead with, by experience

Entry level: Lead with requirements writing, process mapping, SQL and Excel, then one BI tool. Back each with an internship, a college live project, or operations or support work where you documented a process. A sample BRD or a set of user stories you can show in the interview does more than a certificate. Name the domain you know, even if only from a project.

Experienced: Lead with scope and outcomes: releases owned, workshops run, UAT signed off and defects after go-live. Name your domain, such as BFSI, insurance or retail, and your tools in the advert's words. Then show influence: stakeholder conflicts settled, templates other analysts adopted, juniors coached. Those are the skills that move you toward lead analyst or product owner roles.

Certifications for a business analyst resume

  • ECBA, CCBA or CBAP (IIBA) · level and year.
  • PMI-PBA or Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO).
  • SQL or Power BI certificates (Microsoft PL-300), for data-heavy roles.

What to leave off a business analyst resume

  • "Requirement gathering" with no output named. Say what you produced: a BRD, 28 user stories, a process map.
  • Every method you have read about, such as Waterfall, Kanban, SAFe or Six Sigma, as if you practised it. Interviewers ask for an example of each one you list.
  • Programming languages you cannot use. Java or Python with no project behind it invites questions a business analyst role does not need.
  • Confidential client or product names from a bank or insurer. Describe the system instead, for example a loan approval tool with 2 lakh users.

FAQ

Business Analyst skills questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What skills should a business analyst put on a resume?

Requirements work first: BRDs, user stories with acceptance criteria and process maps. Then delivery skills such as UAT and Agile ceremonies, your tools (Jira, Confluence, SQL, Excel, a BI tool) and a named domain such as BFSI or insurance. O*NET ranks active listening, critical thinking and writing among the top skills for the occupation.

What technical skills does a business analyst need?

SQL, Excel, one BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, Jira and Confluence, a process mapping tool such as Visio, and basic wireframing. O*NET's in-demand technology list for the occupation includes Excel, Visio, Power BI, Tableau and Jira. Add versions or certificates only where the advert asks for them.

What soft skills matter most for business analysts?

Asking good questions in workshops, clear writing, managing stakeholders, negotiating scope and staying calm close to a release date. Show each one with an outcome: a conflict settled, fewer questions from developers, a release kept on its date. A row of adjectives gives the reader nothing to check.

What skills does a fresher business analyst need?

Requirements writing, process mapping, SQL, Excel and one BI tool. Show them through an internship, a college live project or an operations job where you documented a process. A short portfolio piece, such as a sample BRD or user stories with acceptance criteria, gives the interviewer something concrete to discuss.

Do business analyst jobs need a degree?

Usually. O*NET places the occupation in a zone where most jobs need a four-year bachelor's degree, though some do not. India's Business Analyst skill course on the National Qualification Register accepts learners with a completed UG diploma, or in the second year of a degree, with no experience, from age 18.

What skills does an entry level business analyst need?

Requirements writing, process mapping, Excel and SQL basics, and clear meeting notes. A junior business analyst is rarely expected to own a project, so show that you can document a process and check requirements with users, with one example from an internship, a course project or your current job.

Which business analyst keywords should I copy from the advert?

The method and tool words it names, such as requirements gathering, user stories, process mapping, UAT, SQL, Jira or Power BI. Use them in the advert's spelling in your skills list and show each one in at least one bullet.
