What the official job profile lists for a graphic designer

O*NET's graphic designer profile lists tasks that map directly onto a resume: creating layouts on the computer, choosing type style and size, arranging images and copy, developing logos and web graphics, preparing files for print, meeting clients to agree a layout, and researching the target audience. The skills it ranks highest are active listening, speaking, critical thinking, active learning and writing, which shows how much of the job is talking with clients. Its hot technologies include Adobe Creative Cloud, Illustrator, After Effects, Figma and Canva, with HTML and CSS also on the list.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics adds the qualities employers look for: analytical skills to see a design through the customer's eyes, artistic ability, communication, computer skills, creativity and time management. It also describes the portfolio as a collection of finished work that shows your style and abilities. Your skills section should point to that portfolio, not replace it.

The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.

Software skills for a graphic designer resume

  • Adobe Photoshop: The standard tool for photo editing, retouching and compositing. An art director reads for volume and type of work, so say what you made in it and for how many clients. Example: Retouched and composited 60+ social creatives a month for 8 clients.
  • Adobe Illustrator: O*NET flags Illustrator as a hot technology for graphic designers. It is where logos, icons and vector artwork live; link the brand kits in your portfolio next to this line. Example: Drew 5 full brand kits including logos, icons and pattern systems.
  • Adobe InDesign: Multi-page layouts such as catalogues, menus and reports are built here. Give page counts and say whether the files went to print, since that tests your setup. Example: Laid out 6 menu cards and a 24-page catalogue for print.
  • Figma: Figma is on O*NET's hot technology list and is now common for mock-ups and team review. Show how you used it to speed up approvals, not only that you can draw frames in it. Example: Cut revision rounds from 4 to 2 by sharing Figma mock-ups first.
  • CorelDRAW: Many print shops and sign makers still work in CorelDRAW. If the job ad names it, put it high; otherwise list it after the Adobe tools. Example: Prepared 30 print files a month in CorelDRAW for a print shop.
  • After Effects (basic motion): O*NET flags After Effects as a hot technology. Short animated posts and reels are a growing share of brand work, so give clip counts and lengths and keep the claim at the level you can show. Example: Animated 12 short festival reels of 10 to 15 seconds.

Design skills for a graphic designer resume

  • Typography and layout: O*NET lists choosing the style and size of type and arranging copy and images among the core tasks. A type system used across many assets proves you think beyond one poster. Example: Set up a 3-font type system used across 60 assets a month.
  • Logo and brand identity: Developing company logos is on O*NET's task list. A full identity runs from brief to guidelines; count the identities you delivered and link at least one case study. Example: Delivered 5 brand identities from brief to guidelines.
  • Social media creatives: Fast, on-brand posts for each platform's sizes. Give the output over a period and the brand type, and show a grid from your portfolio. Example: Designed 48 Instagram posts in 3 months for a food brand.
  • Campaign design: A campaign ties many pieces to one idea. Where the client shared results, quote one, such as engagement or sales, and name your part in it. Example: Designed a festival campaign that lifted post engagement by 40%.
  • Packaging design: Packaging adds die lines, legal text and real print limits. Say how many products went to print, because a printed label proves the file worked. Example: Redesigned a label that went to print for 3 products.

Production skills for a graphic designer resume

  • Print production (bleed, CMYK, proofs): O*NET lists preparing digital files for printing as a task. Printers judge you on bleed, colour mode and fonts, so a low reprint count is strong proof. Example: Sent 100+ files to print with 0 reprints for file errors.
  • Reviewing junior designers: O*NET lists reviewing final layouts and suggesting improvements. Checking others' files before they reach the client is the first step toward senior or art director work. Example: Review about 15 junior designer files a week before client delivery.

Which graphic designer skills to lead with, by experience

Entry level: Lead with the software you use daily and two or three craft skills that your portfolio shows clearly, such as typography or social creatives. Name the projects behind them: college work, freelance clients, internships. Put your portfolio link on the top line. Recruiters for junior roles hire on file quality and speed, so give output counts. If you have sent work to print, say so; clean print files are a skill many juniors lack.

Experienced: Lead with the work types you own end to end (brand identity, campaigns, packaging) and the results clients saw. Then show production depth and people skills: print runs without errors, files reviewed, juniors guided, client meetings led. Those signal readiness for a senior designer or art director role.

Certifications for a graphic designer resume

  • BFA, B.Des or diploma in graphic or communication design.
  • Adobe Certified Professional (Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign).
  • Google UX Design certificate, if moving towards UI work.

What to leave off a graphic designer resume

  • Software percentage bars. They cannot be checked and look odd to a design reviewer.
  • Every font and filter you know. Show typography skill in the resume's own layout instead.
  • Tools you opened once, such as 3D or video suites. A portfolio reviewer will look for that work and not find it.
  • "Creative" and "passionate" as standalone skills. Your portfolio either shows creativity or it does not.

FAQ

Graphic Designer skills questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What skills should a graphic designer put on a resume?

Software first (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, CorelDRAW), then craft skills (typography, layout, branding, social creatives, packaging), then production skills such as print setup and basic motion. Match the order to the job ad, and make sure every skill you list can be seen in your portfolio.

What soft skills do graphic designers need?

BLS lists communication, creativity, analytical skills and time management among the important qualities. On a resume that means taking feedback without losing the idea, explaining your choices to clients, and managing several briefs with different deadlines. Show each through a result, such as fewer revision rounds.

Do I need to list Canva?

Yes, if the role involves quick social content or a small team. O*NET now flags Canva as a hot technology for graphic designers. List it after the Adobe tools so it reads as a speed tool, not your main skill, unless the job ad puts it first.

How do I prove design skills on a resume?

Link your portfolio near the top and give numbers in bullets: assets delivered a month, brand kits completed, print runs, engagement where the client shared it. BLS calls the portfolio essential, so the resume's job is to send the reader there with a reason to look.

Do graphic designers need a degree?

BLS says graphic designers usually need a bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field, and O*NET's survey shows most respondents in the job say one is required. A strong portfolio still matters most when an employer compares candidates.
