What the official job profile lists for a housekeeper
India's National Qualification Register lists a Guest Service Associate (Housekeeping) qualification at NSQF Level 4, from the Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council. It describes the job as cleaning guest rooms and public areas, and possibly carpets, floors and other surfaces. The core units are room and public area cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning, floor and surface polishing, and laundry work. Other units cover communication and service standards, guest privacy and confidentiality, and health, hygiene and safety, including PPE, first aid and sorting waste into coloured bins.
The assessed tasks are concrete: collect the floor master key and sign the key register, load the trolley, put out wet-floor signs, clean and restock the room, report damage and lost property, and complete the paperwork. The next step is Guest Service Executive (Housekeeping), at NSQF Level 4.5, which covers inventory and supervising other staff. For hospital housekeeping, the Healthcare Sector Skill Council's Basic Infection Control micro-credential covers waste segregation, PPE, hand hygiene, spill management and incident reporting.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Cleaning skills for a housekeeper resume
- Room cleaning: The full room routine: dusting every fixture, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, restocking supplies and checking that lights, heating and appliances work. India's Guest Service Associate (Housekeeping) qualification assesses each step. Give rooms per shift and your inspection score. Example: Clean 14 rooms a shift at a 5-star hotel with a 96% inspection score.
- Bed making: Stripping and remaking beds to the property's standard, and changing bed and bath linen in both checked-out and occupied rooms, as the national qualification sets out. Say how many beds a shift and whether supervisors passed them first time. Example: Made 10–12 beds a shift to hotel standard during 12 weeks of training.
- Suite and VIP cleaning: Larger rooms, more expensive fittings and guests who notice small things. Supervisors pass on special guest requests before the shift, and following them exactly is the skill. A record with no complaints on those floors is the proof. Example: Handled VIP and suite floors for 4 years with no guest complaints logged.
- Public area cleaning: Lobbies, restaurants, corridors and washrooms that guests use all day. The qualification adds carpet and upholstery cleaning and floor polishing as core units. Name the areas you covered and any machines you can run, such as a scrubber. Example: Cleaned lobby, 2 restaurants and 8 washrooms per shift for a year.
Safety and hygiene skills for a housekeeper resume
- Chemical safety: Choosing the right cleaning agent for each surface, mixing it as specified and wearing gloves, masks or goggles when the task needs them. The national qualification assesses both. A record with no injuries or damaged surfaces is the proof. Example: Diluted chemicals by chart for 12 weeks with zero skin or surface incidents.
- Terminal cleaning: Hospital rooms and theatres get a full clean after a patient leaves or a case ends. Say which areas you covered, such as wards, ICU or theatres, how many a shift, and your audit results. Example: Kept 100% compliance on ICU and OT terminal cleaning audits.
- Biomedical waste: Segregating healthcare waste by the hospital's and state's rules, then packing, labelling, storing and moving it safely. India's Basic Infection Control micro-credential for healthcare workers tests exactly these steps. Name any training you completed and the year. Example: Trained 30 staff in biomedical waste segregation over 2 years.
- Infection control: Using PPE and hand hygiene to avoid contact with body fluids, following spill protocols and reporting incidents such as needle-stick injuries. These are the learning outcomes of India's Basic Infection Control micro-credential. Audit results are the proof. Example: Passed NABH audits with no housekeeping findings for 3 years.
Service skills for a housekeeper resume
- Lost-and-found: Recording and handing in anything a guest leaves behind, by the property's procedure. The national qualification lists reporting lost and found items as an assessed task. A clean log with every item returned or recorded shows you can be trusted. Example: Logged 40+ lost-and-found items a year with 100% returned or recorded.
- Guest satisfaction: The qualification expects room staff to greet guests politely, clarify what they need, handle complaints and pass serious ones up quickly. Guest reviews or comment cards that name you are the best proof you can give. Example: Named in 25 guest reviews in one year.
- Maintenance reporting: Spotting a broken appliance, a leak or damage while cleaning and reporting it to the supervisor or the housekeeping control desk. The qualification assesses this on every room. Say how quickly you report and how often you check. Example: Reported maintenance issues within 1 hour on 14 rooms a shift.
- Training new staff: Showing new attendants the room checklist and the property's standards. The next-level qualification, Guest Service Executive (Housekeeping), covers assigning duties and inspecting other staff's work. Say how many people you trained. Example: Trained 8 new room attendants on the room checklist.
Which housekeeper skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with room cleaning, bed making, chemical safety and honesty with guest property. Give one number for each: rooms or beds a shift during training, inspection results, items handed in. Add any hotel, hostel or hospital work, even short term. If you trained under the national housekeeping qualification, put it in certifications with the year.
Experienced: Lead with speed and standards together: rooms per shift with your inspection score, floors or VIP areas you were trusted with, audits passed. For hospitals, put infection control and waste segregation first. Then show the supervisor skills: training new staff, checking rooms, managing linen and supplies. Those lead to supervisor and executive housekeeper roles.
Certifications for a housekeeper resume
- Housekeeping or hospitality skill certificate.
- Infection control and biomedical waste training.
- First aid.
What to leave off a housekeeper resume
- "Hard working" or "neat and clean" with nothing behind them. Rooms per shift and an inspection score say more.
- Guest names, room numbers or anything you saw in a guest's room. Guest privacy is a unit in the national qualification, and a resume that breaks it will be noticed.
- Hospital skills on a hotel application, or the other way round, when they push out what the employer needs. Lead with the setting you are applying to.
- Chemicals listed by brand with no safety point. What matters is that you use the right agent safely and protect surfaces.
Action words that show housekeeper skills

What skills should a housekeeper put on a resume?
Room cleaning, bed making, bathroom sanitation, deep cleaning of carpets and floors, linen and amenities, chemical safety and lost-and-found. India's housekeeping qualification also assesses reporting maintenance faults, respecting guest privacy and sorting waste correctly. Choose the ones the advert names and give a number for each, such as rooms per shift.
What skills do hospital housekeepers need?
Infection control, terminal cleaning, spill management and biomedical waste segregation. India's Basic Infection Control micro-credential for healthcare workers covers segregating and packing waste, using PPE and hand hygiene, spill protocols and reporting incidents such as needle-stick injuries. Put any such training in certifications with the year.
What soft skills matter?
Honesty, care at speed, respect for privacy and teamwork. The national qualification also asks for polite communication with guests, handling complaints, turning up on time and keeping personal hygiene. Show them through results: items returned, guest reviews naming you, a clean attendance record.
How do I show housekeeping skills with numbers?
Use rooms per shift, beds made, inspection scores, audit results, guest reviews that mention you and lost-and-found items logged. Give the time period and the type of property, since 14 rooms in a five-star hotel and 14 in a budget hotel are read differently.
What qualification do you need for a housekeeping job in India?
The national Guest Service Associate (Housekeeping) qualification accepts Class 12, or Class 11 with 18 months of relevant experience, or Class 10 with three years, from age 17. Hospital roles may add the Basic Infection Control micro-credential, which needs Class 10 and work in a healthcare setting.
