What the official job profile lists for a security guard

Canada's Job Bank places security guards under NOC 64410, security guards and related security service occupations. The group protects property against theft, vandalism and fire, controls access to buildings, keeps order at public events, and screens passengers, luggage or cargo. For guards, the main duties listed are controlling access, operating control-room equipment and patrolling, enforcing rules and resolving conflicts, making sure safety and emergency procedures are followed, and issuing passes and checking ID. Guards work for security agencies, residential complexes, schools, hospitals, banks, shops, industry and transport sites.

Job Bank usually asks for completed secondary school, and some employers want a college diploma in law and security or police technology. It rates stress tolerance, collaboration and attention to detail as highly important, and lists public safety and security as the main knowledge area. The US O*NET profile matches closely: locking up, patrolling, giving first aid, answering alarms and writing incident reports are its top tasks.

The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.

Access and patrol skills for a security guard resume

  • Gate and access control: Deciding who and what comes in. Job Bank's first listed duty for security guards is controlling access to establishments. Name the site type, its size and your shift pattern so the reader can picture the post. Example: Man a main gate on 8-hour shifts at a 400-flat society.
  • Visitor and vehicle checking: Job Bank lists issuing passes, directing visitors and checking age identification. Logging every visitor and vehicle is the proof, and a long run without an unauthorised entry is the result clients care about. Example: Log 600+ visitors and vehicles a day with no unauthorised entry in 4 years.
  • Patrolling and rounds: O*NET lists patrolling premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion as a core task. Give the area you cover, how often you walk it and whether it is day or night work. Example: Patrol 6 towers every 2 hours on night shifts.
  • Metal detector and baggage checks: Screening bags and people at entrances to malls, events and transport sites. Say what equipment you used and the daily volume, because steady screening of large crowds is a skill in itself. Example: Checked about 1,500 bags a day at a mall on weekends.
  • Crowd and parking control: Job Bank lists keeping order and enforcing rules at public events among the guard's duties. Parking and crowd flow at busy times is where that shows, so give the numbers you managed. Example: Managed parking for 400 vehicles on weekend evenings.

Safety skills for a security guard resume

  • Fire safety and extinguisher use: Job Bank names protecting property against fire, and making sure safety and emergency procedures are followed. Describe a real alarm you handled and the outcome, not only the training you attended. Example: Handled 2 fire alarms with calm evacuation to the assembly point.
  • Emergency evacuation: Moving people out of a building quickly and accounting for them at the assembly point. Drills count here, so give the headcount and the setting, and say whether you led or supported. Example: Practised a building evacuation with 60 people during training.
  • Basic first aid and CPR: O*NET lists responding to medical emergencies with basic first aid among a guard's top tasks. Give your certificate and its date, and any real cases you handled at your post. Example: Gave first aid in 3 minor injuries at the gate in 1 year.
  • Training new guards: Job Bank lists learning and teaching strategies among the skills for this occupation. Showing new guards the site's drills and routines is the first step toward shift supervisor, so give the number you trained. Example: Trained 5 new guards on the society's fire drill.

Systems and reports skills for a security guard resume

  • CCTV monitoring: Job Bank lists operating security control-room equipment as a main duty. Say how many cameras you watched, on which shifts, and how you recorded what you saw. Example: Monitored 24 CCTV cameras on night shifts and logged every alert.
  • Incident and logbook reporting: O*NET lists writing reports of daily activities and irregularities, and Job Bank lists writing among the guard's skills. Reports can end up with police or insurers, so complete, dated entries are what a client checks. Example: Wrote shift logs for 365 days a year with 0 missing entries in audits.
  • Walkie-talkie and alarm panels: Job Bank lists telecommunications among the knowledge areas for this job. Name the radios and panels you used and how many guards or zones you kept in contact. Example: Coordinated 6 guards by walkie-talkie across 6 towers.
  • PSARA compliance: Give the hours, the institute and the year so an agency can check them. If you are applying in another country, list it as past training and add the local licence or permit you hold, since employers screen for their own. Example: Completed 160 hours of PSARA-approved security training in 2026.

Which security guard skills to lead with, by experience

Entry level: Lead with your licence or training, your first aid and fire safety certificates, and the shifts you can work. Then list the duties you have practised: access control, patrols, CCTV and logbooks. Keep each one to a short line with a number, even from training. A supervisor hiring a new guard wants someone reliable, alert and able to write a clear report.

Experienced: Lead with the sites you have protected and the incidents you handled: alarms, medical calls, conflicts calmed, losses stopped. Then show supervision: guards rostered, new staff trained, client reports written. Investigation, control-room work or event security are the specialist skills that move you toward a site supervisor or security officer post.

Certifications for a security guard resume

  • PSARA-approved security guard training · hours and institute.
  • Police verification certificate.
  • Fire safety and first aid certificates; ex-servicemen documents where relevant.

What to leave off a security guard resume

  • A licence or permit for a province you do not hold one in. Employers verify licences, so list only those you can show.
  • Site details such as alarm codes, camera blind spots or patrol timings. They are confidential, and sharing them is a red flag to a client.
  • "Physically fit" with no context. Long standing shifts or regular patrols covered say it with proof.
  • Every course you took on a single line. Keep current certificates with dates and drop the expired ones.

What skills should a security guard put on a resume?

Cover the four parts of the job: access and visitor control, patrols and screening, safety (fire, evacuation, first aid) and records (CCTV, logs, incident reports). Add your training and licence. Job Bank rates stress tolerance, collaboration and attention to detail as highly important, so show each one through something you handled.

What skills can a security guard with no experience list?

Your training first: access control, fire safety, first aid and report writing. Then fitness, the languages you speak and readiness for nights and weekends. Any work that involved crowds, cash or checking people in, such as event staffing or reception, is worth a line with a number.

What soft skills matter?

Job Bank lists persuading, negotiating and social perceptiveness for this occupation, which is the skill of calming a situation before it turns into a fight. Add alertness, politeness and honesty, and tie each one to a fact such as incidents resolved without police or years without a complaint.

What does a security officer add?

Supervision of guards, shift rosters, incident investigation and reports to the client. Show the size of the team you ran, the number of sites, and any changes you made that cut incidents or losses. Job Bank lists leadership and analytical thinking among the attributes for this group.

Do security guards in Canada need a licence?

It depends on the province and the role. Job Bank lists provinces where security work is regulated, including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and says guards carrying firearms need a licence. Quebec requires a permit from the Bureau de la sécurité privée, and airport screening officers need CATSA certification.
