What the official job profile lists for a warehouse worker
O*NET, the US Labor Department's job database, files warehouse workers under stockers and order fillers, along with order pickers, stock clerks and warehouse technicians. Its core tasks cover the whole flow: receiving, unloading and counting stock and recording it by hand or on a computer, checking invoices against what arrived, labelling items, storing them in an orderly way, taking inventory to spot what needs reordering, and picking and issuing goods to fill requests. Dependability is the work style it singles out. Its technology list includes inventory management, ERP, supply chain and spreadsheet software.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics places stockers and order fillers within hand laborers and material movers. It lists the important qualities as attention to detail, hand–eye coordination, listening skills, physical stamina, physical strength and a courteous manner. There are usually no formal education requirements, and on-the-job training typically lasts a month or less. BLS also reports that the group has some of the highest injury and illness rates of all occupations, and that schedules may include nights and weekends.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Picking and dispatch skills for a warehouse worker resume
- Picking: Pulling the right items from bins or shelves to fill an order, usually against an hourly rate. O*NET lists order picker as a job title and getting goods from bins among the tasks. Give your rate against the target. Example: Picked 110 items an hour against a 90 target with a handheld scanner.
- Packing and labelling: Packing goods so they arrive undamaged and marking them so they reach the right place. BLS names packing orders as a task that needs attention to detail. Wrong-item or damage complaints are the measure to quote. Example: Packed and labelled 400+ parcels a shift with zero wrong-item complaints.
- Dispatch and cut-offs: Getting packed orders onto the right truck before it leaves. Missing a cut-off means a late delivery, so recruiters look for your on-time rate, especially through a seasonal peak. Example: Kept dispatch cut-off adherence at 99.2% through a festive peak of 1.4 lakh units a day.
- Returns processing: Checking returned goods, deciding whether each can be resold, and putting it back into stock. Show your volume per shift and how fast items went back on sale. Example: Processed 300 returns a shift with grading and restock in under 24 hours.
Inbound and inventory skills for a warehouse worker resume
- Inbound receiving and GRN: O*NET lists unloading and counting incoming stock, and comparing invoices with what actually arrived, among the core tasks. Trucks handled a day and unloading time are the usual proof. Example: Received 12–15 trucks a day and cut unloading from 90 to 55 minutes.
- Cycle counting: Counting a small part of the stock every day instead of shutting down for a full count. O*NET lists taking inventory to find items to reorder. Quote the accuracy you held. Example: Kept inventory accuracy at 99.6% with daily cycle counts.
- FIFO and FEFO: Shipping the oldest stock first, or the stock that expires first. O*NET lists storing items in an orderly and accessible way. Food, pharma and cosmetics warehouses screen for it, so show the drop in expired stock. Example: Cut expired stock write-offs by 30% in a year with FEFO put-away.
- WMS (SAP EWM): The warehouse management system that tells you where stock is and what to do next. O*NET lists inventory management and ERP software in its technology list. Name the system and the tasks you ran on it. Example: Trained 15 new associates on SAP EWM receiving and put-away.
Equipment, safety and team skills for a warehouse worker resume
- Forklift and reach truck: OSHA requires employers to train and evaluate every forklift operator and to re-evaluate each one at least once every three years. List the truck types you are certified on and the date of your last evaluation. Example: Operated counterbalance and reach trucks for 2 years with zero incidents.
- Warehouse safety: BLS reports that these workers have some of the highest injury and illness rates of any occupation, mostly sprains and strains. Safe lifting and a clean incident record are therefore worth a line of their own. Example: Worked 4 years with zero safety incidents while staging 600+ cases a shift.
- Shift leadership: Running a shift's people, targets and problems so the whole team hits its numbers. Show the team size and the change in units per hour or accuracy while you led it. Example: Raised units per hour from 72 to 96 across a 60-person shift.
- Attrition control: Keeping trained associates on the team. Every leaver means a new starter learning the scanner and the layout, so give the before and after leaver rate and what you changed. Example: Cut shift attrition from 40% to 22% with fair task rotation.
Which warehouse worker skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with reliability and accuracy: turning up for every shift, following instructions, scanner basics and careful counting. BLS stresses physical stamina and strength, so mention any work where you lifted and moved goods all day. Add your availability for nights and weekends and any safety induction you have completed.
Experienced: Lead with your rates and accuracy over months, then the wider jobs you can cover: receiving, cycle counting, returns and WMS tasks. Forklift or reach truck experience with a current evaluation widens the roles open to you. For lead and supervisor roles, show the team you ran, its productivity, its safety record and the people you trained.
Certifications for a warehouse worker resume
- Forklift or reach truck operator training.
- Warehouse safety induction.
- Logistics Sector Skill Council certificates.
What to leave off a warehouse worker resume
- "Able to lift heavy objects" with no detail. Say what you moved and how much a shift instead, such as cases staged or trucks unloaded.
- A forklift certificate from years ago with no recent driving. OSHA requires re-evaluation at least every three years, so give the date of your last one.
- Equipment you have only seen used. Many warehouses test scanners and trucks on the first day.
- Long lists of job duties. Pick the four or five tasks you did most and give each a number.

What skills should a warehouse worker put on a resume?
List the jobs you can do on the floor: picking, packing, receiving, cycle counting, put-away using FIFO or FEFO, loading and returns. Then the equipment: scanners, the WMS you used, and any forklift or reach truck you are trained on. Finish with safety and reliability, backed by your incident record and attendance.
What skills do freshers need for warehouse jobs?
BLS lists physical stamina and strength, attention to detail, hand–eye coordination and listening skills among the important qualities, along with being pleasant to customers. Show you can follow instructions, use a handheld scanner, keep accurate counts and turn up for every shift, including nights and weekends, which BLS notes are common.
Which skills lead to supervisor roles?
Inbound receiving and inventory control, strong WMS use, training new associates and tracking the shift's productivity. Supervisors are also judged on safety and keeping people, so a clean incident record and low turnover on your team help. Give a number for each, such as accuracy, units per hour or people trained.
How do I show warehouse skills with numbers?
Use your pick rate against target, parcels packed per shift, inventory accuracy, trucks unloaded and unloading time, dispatch cut-offs met and days without a safety incident. Warehouses track nearly all of these on the WMS or a shift board, so ask your lead for the figures before you write.
Do you need a licence or certificate to drive a forklift?
In the US, OSHA requires employers to make sure each forklift operator is competent, through formal instruction, practical training and an evaluation at work, with a fresh evaluation at least once every three years. OSHA also says it is against federal law for anyone under 18 to operate a forklift.
