What the official job profile lists for a cashier
Canada's Job Bank groups cashiers under NOC 65100. Its profile describes people who run cash registers, price scanners and computers to record and take payment for goods, services and admissions. The main duties it lists are greeting customers, working out the price and the total, taking cash, cheque, credit card or debit, bagging items, reconciling payments with sales at the end of the shift, and checking age before selling lottery tickets, alcohol or tobacco. Cashiers work in stores, restaurants, theatres, sports venues, currency exchange booths and government offices.
On skills, Job Bank rates attention to detail as highly important, with numeracy, active listening and reading people's reactions also listed. The US O*NET profile for cashiers points the same way: its top tasks include taking payment, issuing refunds and change, sorting out complaints and keeping checkout stations stocked with cash, and it names point of sale software among the technology used. Neither source asks for a degree, so your skills and a clean cash record carry the resume.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Cash and billing skills for a cashier resume
- POS billing software: Canada's Job Bank describes cashiers as operating cash registers, price scanners and computers to record payment, and O*NET lists point of sale software for this job. Name the system and the number of customers you billed per shift. Example: Billed 250 customers a shift on a supermarket POS system.
- Cash counting and handling: Taking cash, giving the right change and keeping the drawer clean all shift. A store manager reads this through one number: how far your drawer was off, and over how long a period. Example: Handled ₹3.5 lakh in daily cash with variance under 0.05% over 18 months.
- Till opening and closing reconciliation: Job Bank lists totalling payments at the end of the shift and matching them to sales among a cashier's main duties. Say how many tills you closed and how quickly the report reached the supervisor. Example: Closed 5 tills and handed over the cash report within 20 minutes of the last bill.
- UPI, card and wallet payments: Payment by cash, cheque, credit card or debit is a core duty in the Job Bank profile. List each method you take by name, and give a count of failed or reversed payments if you kept one. Example: Processed 90 UPI payments a day at a pharmacy counter with 0 failed refunds.
- GST billing and invoices: Pricing the sale, adding the right tax and printing a correct invoice. Where your store issues tax invoices, say how many you raised a day and which counter or product line they covered. Example: Raised GST invoices for 150 medicine sales a day on a POS system.
- Returns, refunds and exchanges: O*NET lists issuing receipts, refunds, credits and change among a cashier's top tasks. Recruiters want to see you followed store policy and kept the customer calm, so give the weekly volume and how few reached a manager. Example: Handled 30 returns a week following the store policy with 0 disputes escalated.
- Counterfeit note detection: Spotting fake notes protects the till and the store. Name the checks you use, such as a UV lamp or feel-and-look tests, and how many notes you caught, since that is hard to fake. Example: Stopped 4 counterfeit ₹500 notes in a year using the UV checker and manual checks.
Banking cashier skills for a cashier resume
- Core banking cash operations: Bank counters log every deposit and withdrawal in the bank's core system, and each one must balance at day end. Give your daily count and whether your cash ever came up short. Example: Handled 120 cash deposits and withdrawals a day at a bank counter.
- NEFT / RTGS / IMPS: Fund transfers leave no room for a wrong digit in an account number. A branch manager reads for the volume you handled and your error record, so state both plainly. Example: Processed 40 fund transfer requests a day with 0 wrong-account errors.
Soft skills for a cashier resume
- Speed with accuracy: Job Bank rates attention to detail as highly important for cashiers. Speed only counts when the drawer still balances, so pair a busy-day customer count with your shortage record. Example: Billed 120 customers a day on weekends with 0 cash shortage for 6 months.
- Staying calm in queues: Long lines test patience on both sides of the counter. Show it with something you changed and the wait time before and after, rather than calling yourself patient. Example: Introduced 2 counters at peak hours, cutting evening waits from 10 to 4 minutes.
- Team lead at the counter: Job Bank lists managing people, coordinating and instructing among cashier skills. Lead cashiers open tills, cover breaks and train new staff, so give team size and the number you trained. Example: Led 5 cashiers on the evening shift and trained 8 new joiners.
Which cashier skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with accuracy and service. Put cash counting, the payment methods you can take, any POS or billing system you have used and the languages you speak near the top. Add shift and weekend availability, since stores roster around it. One honest number per skill, such as customers served on a busy day, does more than a long list.
Experienced: Lead with your cash record and responsibility: tills you closed, variance over months, refunds and returns handled within policy. Then show the step up: opening and closing the store, covering breaks, training new cashiers or running a counter team at peak hours. Those duties point toward head cashier or front-end supervisor roles.
Certifications for a cashier resume
- Retail cashier or sales associate training (Skill India / RASCI) · with year.

What to leave off a cashier resume
- "Good with money" or "honest" with no proof. A shortage-free record over a stated period says it for you.
- Every brand of till you have ever seen. Name the system you used most and the one the job ad mentions.
- Store security details such as safe codes, float amounts or cash-pickup times. They do not belong on a resume and can worry an employer.
- Bank-only skills on a retail application, or retail-only skills on a bank one. Trim the list to what this counter needs.

What skills should a cashier put on a resume?
Lead with the money skills: POS billing, cash handling, till reconciliation, card and digital payments, tax invoices, returns and counterfeit checks. Then add speed, honesty and customer service, each with a number. Job Bank rates attention to detail as the most important personal attribute for cashiers, so accuracy figures belong near the top.
What cashier skills can I list with no experience?
Cash counting, card and mobile payments, basic computer use, the languages you speak and polite service. Back them with any work where you handled money or served people: a family shop, a school canteen, a fundraiser or a market stall. A small, honest number beats a long list of adjectives.
What is the most important skill for a cashier?
Accuracy with money. Job Bank lists reconciling payments with total sales at the end of every shift as a main duty, so a manager wants proof your drawer balances. Show it with months without a shortage or a variance rate over a stated period.
Do bank cashiers need different skills?
Yes. They add the bank's core system, cash deposits and withdrawals, fund transfers and customer identity checks. Accuracy matters even more, because a wrong account number is harder to reverse than a wrong price. List your daily volume and your error record.
Do cashiers in Canada need a certificate or licence?
Usually not. Job Bank says some secondary school is usually required and some employers want a high school diploma. The occupation is not regulated in Canada, though a casino gaming licence may be needed for cashiers in gambling casinos. O*NET's US profile puts on-the-job training at anywhere from a few days to a year.
