What the official job profile lists for a sales representative
O*NET, the US Labor Department's job database, describes the sales representative's day in concrete tasks: answering customers' questions on products, prices, availability and credit terms; recommending products to fit a need; quoting prices, delivery dates and contract terms; preparing contracts and order forms; giving out samples and catalogs; following up after the sale; tracking competitors' products and prices; and keeping sales records, budgets and expense reports. Active listening, speaking and critical thinking lead its skills list. Initiative, self-confidence and perseverance lead its work styles. Salesforce, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint appear in its technology list.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics splits the job in two. Some reps sell everyday goods such as food, office supplies and clothing; others sell technical and scientific products such as equipment or pharmaceuticals. It names customer service, interpersonal skills, physical stamina and self-confidence as important qualities, and notes that travel depends on the size of the territory. For retail selling, BLS adds persistence, persuasion and math.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Selling skills for a sales representative resume
- Territory and beat planning: Deciding which customers to visit, in what order and how often, so the whole patch is covered without wasted travel. BLS notes some reps cover large territories, so show the area and your visit rate. Example: Covered 35 outlets a day on a fixed beat with 100% plan adherence over 3 months.
- New account opening: Finding and winning customers who have never bought from you. O*NET lists spotting prospects through directories, client referrals, clubs and trade shows as a core task. Count the accounts you opened and over what period. Example: Added 42 new retail outlets in 3 months as a trainee.
- Doctor detailing: Presenting a medicine's evidence and uses to doctors in short visits. It is the core of pharmaceutical selling, so name your call rate, the size of your doctor list and the target you reached. Example: Made 11 doctor calls a day across 180 doctors, reaching 112% of the FY26 target.
- Brand launches: Taking a new product from zero to steady orders: briefing customers, placing samples and following up. O*NET lists handing out product samples and catalogs among the tasks. Give first-year sales or outlets reached. Example: Grew a newly launched brand to ₹38 lakh in its first year.
- Technical selling: Selling products where the buyer needs the specification explained, such as equipment or industrial supplies. BLS notes that technical and scientific products usually call for a bachelor's degree, so pair this with your training. Example: Won 9 industrial accounts from competitors by offering free energy audits.
Accounts and channel skills for a sales representative resume
- Key account management: Growing a few large customers year after year rather than chasing one-off orders. O*NET lists following up after a sale to fix problems and give ongoing support. Name the accounts' combined value and the growth. Example: Grew a ₹12 crore territory 38% in three years through 25 key accounts.
- Distributor and stockist management: Working through middlemen who hold stock and deliver to shops. Recruiters check that you managed their stock levels, claims and credit, not just placed orders, so say how many partners you handled. Example: Built a dealer network of 6 and reached 118% of target in the final year.
- Collections: Getting paid on time. A sale only counts once the money comes in, and O*NET lists quoting credit terms among the core tasks. Give the share of invoices collected within your company's standard days. Example: Collected 92% of territory invoices within 45 days of billing.
- Chemist coverage: Making sure pharmacies near your doctors stock the brands you promote, so prescriptions turn into sales. Show the number of pharmacies covered and how you timed stock to a launch. Example: Kept new brands stocked at 70 chemists near key clinics before launch week.
Discipline and soft skills skills for a sales representative resume
- Sales app and CRM reporting: Logging calls, orders and expenses on time. O*NET lists keeping sales records and filing expense reports as tasks, and names Salesforce in its technology list. Say which tool and how complete your records were. Example: Logged 100% of orders and calls on the sales app the same day for 12 months.
- Persistence: Going back after a no. BLS lists persistence as an important quality for retail sales workers, and O*NET names perseverance among the work styles for sales reps. A result won after a refusal is the clearest proof. Example: Raised ₹1.6 lakh from 18 businesses for a college fest, most after a first refusal.
- Negotiation: Agreeing price, credit and delivery terms that keep the customer and protect margin. BLS lists negotiating sales terms among a rep's duties. Your average discount or price held is a fair test. Example: Held average discount under 6% on ₹12 crore of annual equipment sales.
Which sales representative skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with the habits a sales manager can trust from day one: following a route, accurate order taking, clear speech in your customers' languages and willingness to travel. Add any selling you have done, even a weekend shop job or a fundraising drive, with a number. If you are going for technical or pharma roles, put your degree and product training near the top.
Experienced: Lead with percent of target over several periods, then the accounts and territory behind it: new customers won, key accounts grown, distributors managed and collections within terms. Show your CRM discipline and any product launch you drove. For senior rep or team lead roles, add coaching a new hire or mapping a new territory.
Certifications for a sales representative resume
- Company or industry sales training programmes.
- Pharma product training for medical representatives.
- Salesforce or CRM user certificates for B2B roles.
What to leave off a sales representative resume
- "Excellent communication skills" alone. Your target achievement and accounts won already prove it.
- "Self-motivated" and "go-getter". Every sales resume says this; a full year of logged calls or a hard-won account shows it.
- Revenue figures you cannot explain in an interview. Hiring managers usually ask how a number was reached, so only list figures you can break down.
- Customer names under a confidentiality agreement. Describe the account by industry and size instead.

FAQ
Sales Representative skills questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
What skills should a sales representative put on a resume?
Group them the way a sales manager thinks: winning business (prospecting, new accounts, product demos or detailing, negotiation), keeping it (key accounts, distributors, collections) and running yourself (territory planning, CRM reporting, persistence). O*NET ranks active listening, speaking and critical thinking highest for sales reps, so show those through results rather than as a list.
What skills do medical representatives need?
Detailing a product clearly to doctors, solid knowledge of the medicines you carry, coverage of doctors and nearby pharmacies, launch planning and same-day call reporting. BLS groups pharmaceutical goods with technical and scientific products, where reps typically need at least a bachelor's degree, so put your science degree near the top.
What field sales skills matter for freshers?
Turning up to a planned route every day, taking orders accurately, speaking clearly in the languages your customers use, and being willing to travel. Recruiters also look for persistence. A part-time selling job, a fundraising drive or a campus sponsorship you won all count as proof, especially with a number attached.
How do I show sales skills with numbers?
Lead with percent of target, since every sales manager reads that first. Then add the figures that explain it: new accounts, growth on last year, calls or visits a day, collections within terms and your rank in the team. Give the period for each so a reader can compare.
Do sales representatives need a degree?
It depends on what you sell. BLS says a high school diploma is generally enough for products that are not scientific or technical, while reps selling technical or scientific products typically need at least a bachelor's degree. Many companies run formal training programmes for new reps that can last up to a year.
Which sales keywords for resume screening should I use?
The ones the job advert names: prospecting, cold calling, CRM (for example Salesforce or HubSpot), pipeline management, negotiation, closing and quota attainment. Copy its exact words into your skills list and back each with a number in a bullet.
