Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Assistant Designer, Womenswear role at Aarohi, posted on LinkedIn. I graduated in Fashion Design this year, and my portfolio at behance.net/example-ananyabose includes my graduation collection and the styles I designed during my internship.

My graduation collection, 'Taant Revisited', reworked Bengal handloom into six contemporary looks: cropped jackets, wide trousers and wrap dresses in handwoven cotton. Working with weavers in Phulia taught me to design around what a loom can do rather than forcing a print onto it. During my internship at an ethnic-wear brand in Kolkata I designed 24 kurta and co-ord styles and made tech packs for 18 of them. Nine were picked for the festive range, and I sat through three fit rounds with the sampling unit to get them right.

I illustrate by hand and in Illustrator, and I use CLO 3D to test drape before sampling.

Aarohi's use of handloom in everyday wear is exactly the space I want to design for. I can join immediately and would be glad to complete a design test.

Yours sincerely,
Ananya Bose

Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to apply for the Senior Designer, Menswear role at Threadline. I have five years designing menswear private labels for e-commerce, most recently for two brands at a large marketplace's private-label team in Gurugram.

I design over 400 styles a year, so I have learnt to design from data as well as mood boards. Each season I review sell-through by fit, fabric and price point before building the range, and I drop styles that look good on a board but have never sold. Full-price sell-through on my lines has risen from 54% to 68%. I also rewrote our tech pack template with measured sketches and construction photos, which cut sampling rounds from three to two and saved about three weeks per drop.

Before e-commerce I made tech packs for European buyers at an export house in Noida, which taught me precision.

Threadline's plan to expand into smart casuals fits my recent work. My notice period is 30 days, and my portfolio is at karanarora.example.com.

Yours sincerely,
Karan Arora

Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching fashion designer CV. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter

Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:

  • I design 400+ menswear styles a year and lifted full-price sell-through from 54% to 68%, and I am applying for your Senior Designer role.
  • Nine of the 24 styles I designed during my internship were picked for a festive range, and I would like to join Aarohi as an Assistant Designer.

What to write in the body

One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a fashion designer, the body should also:

  • Give one commercial result: styles selected, sell-through, markdowns.
  • Show how you work with sampling, vendors and merchandisers.

How to close the letter

Most brands hire after a portfolio review and a design test. Offer both, mention which of their collections you would design for, and give your joining date. Keep the letter focused; the portfolio does the showing.

Writing it with no experience

  • Lead with your graduation collection and what you learnt from making it.
  • Add internship styles and any selections.
  • Offer a design test.

Mistakes to avoid

  • No portfolio link.
  • Describing your passion for fashion instead of your work.
  • Ignoring commercial results.
