Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Junior Artist position at Colourwall Studio that I saw on your Instagram page. I finished my BFA in Painting at Rabindra Bharati University this year, and I would like to spend the next few years learning how a mural studio plans, prices and paints large walls.
The project closest to your work is a 300 square foot mural I designed and painted with two classmates for a primary school in Kolkata last year. I drew the mock-up, scaled it to the wall with a chalk grid, and mixed every colour from a palette of nine acrylics so we could repaint any patch later. We finished in eleven days, two days ahead of the school reopening, and the head teacher asked us back to paint the library.
I have shown work in three group shows, including a student show at a city gallery where two of my paintings sold. I photograph and catalogue all my work, keep an Instagram portfolio of forty pieces, and sketch layouts in Procreate before I touch a wall. My portfolio is at ritikasen.example.com.
I can start immediately, I am comfortable on scaffolding, and I would be happy to paint a small test panel in your studio so you can judge my brushwork and speed.
Sincerely,
Hannah Castellano

Dear Hiring Manager,
I would like to apply for the Lead Artist role at Northlight Art Projects. For five years I have painted commissioned murals for hotels, cafes, offices and schools across Bengaluru, and your advert for someone who can run a wall from brief to handover describes my working week.
Since going independent in 2023 I have delivered twenty-two murals for seventeen clients, and nine of those clients came back or sent a friend. The largest was a 2,400 square foot office atrium that I painted with a crew of four in sixteen working days, on scaffolding, without stopping the office from working. Before that, at a studio, I painted twelve cafe and hotel walls and trained three junior painters in scaling and blending.
What clients notice most is that the numbers hold. I prepare a Procreate mock-up for every brief, take changes before paint is bought, and price the job from a materials sheet I have refined over twenty jobs; my estimates now land within eight percent of the final cost.
Your recent hotel projects in Mysuru and Coorg would suit my experience with exterior paints and long site stays. My portfolio, with sizes and timelines for every wall, is at farhanwalls.example.com, and I am available to meet any day next week.
Sincerely,
Luis Navarro
Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching artist resume. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter
Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:
- I have painted 34 commissioned walls in five years, the largest a 2,400 sq ft office atrium finished in 16 days, and I am writing about your Lead Artist role.
- As a painting graduate whose first mural, a 300 sq ft school wall, was finished two days early, I would like to apply for your Junior Artist position.
What to write in the body
One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For an artist, the body should also:
- Show that you can work to a brief and a deadline, not only make your own work.
- Point to your portfolio and say what the reader will find there.
How to close the letter
Close by offering something the reader can judge quickly: a test panel, a studio visit or a short portfolio walk-through. Give your availability, mention travel or site readiness if the job needs it, and thank them for looking at your work.
Writing it with no experience
- Use college shows, a school or community wall, or a portrait commission for a family friend as your proof.
- Mention prizes, sales and any work that people other than your teachers chose.
- Offer a test piece or a paid trial week instead of asking for a chance.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing about passion for art without one finished project.
- Sending the letter without a portfolio link.
- Pasting your artist statement from a gallery show into a job letter.
How do I write an artist cover letter?
Name the role, describe one or two finished projects with sizes, media and deadlines, show you can follow a client brief, link your portfolio and offer a test piece or meeting.
Is a cover letter to a gallery different?
Yes. A gallery letter introduces a body of work and why it fits the gallery's programme; a job letter shows you can deliver work for clients on time.
What should a fresher artist write?
Your degree, your strongest project, any show or sale, and a clear offer to do a test piece.
How long should an artist cover letter be?
Under one page, about 250-350 words.
