Early-career example

Jordan Eckert

Austin, TX · jordan.eckert@example.com

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Associate Program Manager role at Aravalli Software, which I saw on Naukri. I completed my MBA in Operations and IT at MDI Gurgaon this year, after a B.Tech in Computer Science, and my internship was spent keeping a six-team delivery plan on track.

At Brightline Software Services I tracked 38 tasks across six teams in Jira and built a weekly red-amber-green dashboard for the delivery head. Two teams kept missing hand-offs to each other, so I added a short dependency column and a Monday check between their leads; the next three hand-offs happened on the planned day. I also wrote the weekly status note for senior leadership.

I use Jira, Confluence, MS Project and Power BI, and my engineering degree helps me follow technical conversations and spot risks early.

I can join immediately and would welcome the chance to discuss how I could support your delivery teams.

Sincerely,
Jordan Eckert

Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to apply for the Senior Program Manager role for your banking accounts. I am a PMP-certified program manager with six years in IT services, and I currently run a banking modernisation program of four linked projects and 45 engineers at Northwind Tech Services.

I own a budget of ₹7.5 crore and report fortnightly to the client's steering group. Release delays were our biggest risk when I took over, mostly from dependencies between the four teams, so I set up one shared dependency board reviewed twice a week; delays fell by 35%, and the program closed three weeks ahead of plan and within budget.

Before this I managed single projects for insurance clients, which taught me change control and how to say no to scope, politely, in writing.

Your advert mentions a multi-year core banking migration, which is the kind of program I want to lead next. My notice period is 60 days.

Sincerely,
Sandra Okafor

Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching program manager resume. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

How to open the letter

Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:

  • I delivered a four-project, 45-engineer banking program three weeks early and within its ₹7.5 crore budget; I am applying for your Senior Program Manager role.
  • As an MDI MBA graduate who kept a six-team delivery plan on track during my internship, I would like to apply for your Associate Program Manager role.

What to write in the body

One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a program manager, the body should also:

  • Show delivery results: on time, on budget, delays cut, risks avoided.
  • Mention governance: steering reports, dependency and risk management, frameworks such as SAFe.

How to close the letter

Close by linking your programs to theirs in one line, giving your notice period, and offering to walk through a steering report or dependency board with details removed.

Writing it with no experience

  • Use an internship or college project where you coordinated several teams, with numbers.
  • Show tools: Jira, MS Project, dashboards.
  • Apply for associate program or project coordinator roles first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing a single project as a program.
  • No budget, team size or dates.
  • Mixing product decisions into a delivery role.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What should a program manager cover letter include?

Program scale, delivery results, governance and dependency management, stakeholder reporting, certifications and your notice period.

How is a program manager different from a project manager?

A project manager delivers one project; a program manager coordinates several linked projects towards a shared goal.

How do I write a program manager cover letter with no experience?

Use internships or projects where you coordinated multiple teams, show your tools, and apply for associate or coordinator roles.

Should I mention PMP or PgMP?

Yes. Write the certification and year; PgMP is especially valued for program roles.
