What does an architect do?

The work covers site and code research, design, drawings and 3D models, specifications, permitting and construction administration. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that all states require architects to be licensed, usually after an architecture degree, a paid internship of about three years and a qualifying exam, so your resume should show where you stand on that path.

Architect resume format and template

  • Link your portfolio at the top and keep the resume to one or two pages; the portfolio does the visual work.
  • Name building types and areas (housing, offices, sq ft, units) so a hiring principal sees your scale.
  • Keep the layout clean and restrained: a cluttered resume hurts an architect more than most.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Architect resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

Should I put my license status on a resume?

Yes. Licensed architects write "Registered Architect" with the state and year. If you are on the path, give your internship hours and exam divisions passed, for example "3,200 experience hours; 4 of 6 exam divisions passed". Firms plan roles around where you stand.

Which software should an architect list?

Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp and a renderer such as Lumion, Enscape or V-Ray, plus Adobe InDesign and Photoshop for presentations. Name them as the posting does, and tie each to a project so a reader sees the scale you used it on.

Should I include a portfolio link?

Yes. Put it beside your contact details and make sure it opens without a login. Keep the portfolio to a few strong projects, label your own part in each, and make the resume and portfolio list the same projects in the same order.

What goes in an architect CV template for UK jobs?

A UK architect CV runs to two pages plus a portfolio, with your ARB registration or Part 1, 2 or 3 stage near the top, then projects by RIBA stage, building type and area. Architect CV examples in one plain column keep the portfolio doing the visual work. Senior CVs add teams led and approvals won.

How is a senior architect's resume different?

It shows the scale of projects, teams led, approvals won, budgets and client or consultant management, not only drawing work. Lead each job with the building type, area and your role, then the result, such as approval time or clashes cut.

What should an architecture resume include?

An architecture resume shows your degree, license or licensure path, the software you use (Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe) and a short project list with your role, the building type, size and phase. Sample architecture resume layouts put a portfolio link in the header and keep the resume to one or two pages; architectural resume examples add built work and awards.
