Caregiver Resume Examples & Format

A caregiver helps people who cannot fully look after themselves, usually older adults and people with an illness or disability, with daily living: bathing, dressing, meals, housekeeping, getting to appointments and keeping records of any change in the client's condition. A caregiver resume should prove skills such as personal care: bathing, dressing, toileting, meal planning and preparation, and safe transfers (wheelchair, hoist, walker) with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a caregiver do?

In the US most work in clients' homes, and others work in group homes or care communities, with evening and weekend hours depending on the client's needs. A caregiver resume should show your training, the kind of clients you have cared for, your daily tasks and how reliable you are. The same resume works for family and child care roles: a child care resume or a babysitting resume lists the ages you cared for, the hours and the routines you ran, and any CPR or first aid training.

Caregiver duties to put on a resume

  • Help clients with daily personal tasks such as bathing, dressing and toileting.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks such as laundry, washing dishes and vacuuming.
  • Plan and prepare meals that suit the client's diet.
  • Help organize the client's schedule and arrange or provide transportation to appointments.
  • Check vital signs and give medication reminders where the care plan and supervisor allow.
  • Keep records and report changes in the client's condition to the supervisor or family.
  • Provide companionship and keep clients active and engaged.

Best resume format for a caregiver

  • List training first if you are new; put experience first after a year of paid work.
  • Name the client types you have cared for, such as older adults, dementia or stroke recovery, without naming people or describing their illness in detail.
  • Show your availability, because aides often work evening and weekend hours depending on clients' needs (BLS).
  • Keep a skills section that matches the job posting, so a caregiver resume skills list reads like the posting.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

  • Entry level is a high school diploma or equivalent, though some positions do not require it, and aides get short-term on-the-job training (BLS). Community colleges and vocational schools also offer programs.
  • Requirements vary by state. Aides in certified home health or hospice agencies must complete formal training and pass a standardized test, and may be required to hold first aid and CPR certification (BLS).

Where can I see caregiver resume examples for different experience levels?

The three caregiver resume examples on this page cover an entry-level caregiver with family caregiving, a home caregiver with five years of dementia and stroke care, and a senior caregiver supervising a team. Copy the structure, then swap in your own tasks and numbers.

Which caregiver resume skills should I list?

List hard skills such as personal care, safe transfers, medication reminders, vital signs, meal preparation and dementia care, then soft skills such as patience and reliability. Pick the ones the job posting names, because employers often scan the skills section first.

How do I write a caregiver resume without experience?

Lead with training and any family or volunteer caregiving, with the tasks and how long you did them. Add CPR or first aid if you hold it, your availability and your high school diploma. Employers give short-term on-the-job training, so reliability counts.

Is caring for a family member experience?

Yes, if it was regular and lasted a while. Label it as unpaid family caregiving, list the tasks and the duration, and keep the person's details private. Hiring managers read it as real experience.

Do caregivers need a certification?

It depends on the state and the employer. BLS says aides in certified home health or hospice agencies must complete formal training and pass a standardized test, and may need first aid and CPR certification. Check the job posting and list only what you hold.

How do I put babysitting on a resume?

List it as a job: Babysitter or Child Care Provider, the years, the family by a short label and the ages of the children. Write a babysitter description for the resume with one number per line, such as Cared for two children aged 4 and 7, 15 hours a week; prepared meals, helped with homework and kept the bedtime routine. Add CPR or first aid training.
