Executive Resume Examples & Format

An executive sets the direction of an organization or a major part of it and answers for the results: strategy, the budget and profit and loss, the leadership team, and the relationship with the board and investors. An executive resume should prove skills such as P&L management, strategic planning, and mergers and acquisitions with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does an executive do?

A chief executive officer owns the whole business; a chief operating officer runs day-to-day operations; a chief financial officer owns the finances, reporting and capital. Executive resumes are read for scope and outcomes, so they lead with the size of what you ran and the change you delivered. The executive resume samples below cover a CEO, a COO and a CFO.

Executive duties to put on a resume

  • Set the company or function strategy with the board, and translate it into annual and multi-year plans.
  • Own the profit and loss, the budget and the capital plan, and report results to the board and investors.
  • Build, lead and develop the senior leadership team, including succession and compensation.
  • Oversee operations, finance or commercial functions and the key customer, supplier and partner relationships.
  • Represent the organization with investors, lenders, regulators, the press and the community.
  • Lead mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and major change programs.

Executive resume format and template

  • Two pages is the norm; open with a short executive summary that gives the scale (revenue, people, sites) and the change you delivered.
  • Lead every role with scope in one line: revenue or budget, headcount, geography, and who you reported to.
  • Add a short Board and advisory section if you hold seats; leave out early-career roles after about 15 years.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Executive resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How long should an executive resume be?

Two pages is the norm. The first page carries the summary, scope and your two most recent roles; the second holds earlier roles, board seats and education. Three pages only if you have a long record of board and advisory work that is relevant.

What goes in an executive summary on a resume?

Three or four sentences: your function and years, the scale you have run (revenue, people, sites), and two results with numbers. Skip adjectives like visionary; a figure such as a margin move or a revenue gain is what a board member can use.

How is a CEO resume different from a COO or CFO resume?

A CEO resume shows the whole business, strategy and board and investor work. A COO resume shows operations at scale, such as sites, cost per unit and delivery. A CFO resume shows the finances: capital raised, audits, forecasting accuracy and transactions.
