What does an insurance agent do?

The work is finding prospects, running a needs analysis, comparing quotes and carriers, explaining exclusions honestly, handling applications and renewals, and supporting clients through claims. Agents work as captive agents for one insurer, independent agents who place business with several carriers, or brokers, and the resume should show clients, premium written, retention and the licenses you hold.

Best resume format for an insurance agent

  • Show clients, first-year premium and retention percentage.
  • State the product mix: life, health, auto, home, commercial.
  • Keep to one page; do not list policies sold to named people.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Insurance Agent resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What skills should an insurance agent put on a resume?

Needs analysis, life and health products, applications, claims help, renewals and referral lead generation. Name the lines you are licensed for and the carriers or systems you use, and give a figure such as premium written or retention for the skills that matter most.

How is an insurance agent's resume different from a financial advisor's?

An agent shows policy sales, premium and retention. A financial advisor shows portfolios, assets under advice and planning outcomes. If you do both, label each line clearly so a reader does not mix the two.

Do I need to list my license when applying as an insurance agent?

Yes. Carriers and agencies check the state license first, so list the lines you hold, the state and the year, or say that your exam is scheduled and give the date. Do not list a license that has lapsed.
